Hepatitis B is a virus that can damage the liver and lead to lifelong health problems. Newborns need the hepatitis B vaccine soon after birth because they might be unknowingly exposed to the virus during labor or shortly after coming home. Around 90% of babies infected at birth will go on to develop chronic hepatitis B. The hepatitis B vaccine is over 95% effective at preventing hepatitis B in children and adults.
