Athletes don’t just hear our words. They absorb our emotions, even if we say nothing.
Pressure transfers easily. Stress becomes their stress. Calm becomes their calm.
Create a clearer environment by regulating your own emotions first.
3 WAYS TO RESET YOUR EMOTIONS:
1. Pause and Reflect
Notice your tone and mood before interacting.
2. Speak Your Feelings Out Loud
Clearly state your feelings (“I’m frustrated so I’m taking a moment”). Show athletes how emotional regulation works in real time.
3. Celebrate Effort, Not Just Outcomes
Focus postgame conversations on resilience, learning, and effort, instead of the result alone.
