Things I have learned this week after two home births, something completely new to me:
- my two past birth trainings favor the medical system, and I wonder why that is. There needs to be additions made to the curriculum. Doulas decrease c-section rates by 10%-56%, but if they are not trained to work in the home, where is there efficacy in this statistic?
- I am grateful for my trainings, however, it gave me an icky feeling, like I failed my client with the information I provided, evidence-based, yet still heavily relying on the system versus intuition, something I am learning myself to lean into
- my clients both had intense mental strength and knew they wanted a home birth. They both at some points during labor asked how much longer, and we held on to “soon” but the uncertainty of “when”
- mental strength paired with their intuition and creating a support system that aligned with their vision got them to their finish lines. Hands down.
- both midwives, did their own variation of their job, one more intuition based, the other a bit more “to the book” but not at the level of hospital midwifery care I’ve seen practiced
- there is great peace in being surrounded by the people you love and being comfortable in your own home
- I am forever grateful for Gena Garcia-Kirby’s course on rebozo methods. I used to feel I had to have 100+ things to be prepared, and as of late I’ve only used my rebozo, which I gifted to my last client, and my crochet breast model my doula friend Brey gifted me
- Every birth is a new learning experience and opportunity to grow
- that being said, There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heaven
