I can officially say it — my first full marathon is in the books! I set a goal to complete one before my mid-centurion birthday, and I’m proud to say: mission accomplished.
As a dentist and leader, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between running a marathon and running a business. Both require discipline, self-awareness, mental toughness, and the ability to keep going when things get hard. You have to focus on the good, listen to yourself, and constantly reflect on how to improve.
Despite weeks of training with an amazing group of running partners Judy and Rob, race day nerves kicked in hard. It was raining — and if you know me, I don’t run or golf in the rain. I nearly backed out just thinking about running for 4.5hrs for my first race in this weather.
By mile two, my socks were soaked, a blister was forming, and I had to talk myself through the discomfort. I had prepped that morning with a banana, a scone, some energy chews, and chafing balm — but nothing could prepare me for the mental challenge. Around mile three, I ran behind a young woman covered in mud and determination for the next 23 miles. Miles 3–6 were through a pitch-black tunnel. If you didn’t have a light, you were in trouble.
Thankfully, Hailey had made me a Spotify playlist. As I ran, I reflected on the trials, triumphs, and relationships that shaped me — my incredible circle of friends, my staff who take such great care of our patients, and the practices I’ve poured years into building. I felt immense gratitude for the patients who’ve entrusted me with their care and the team that helps me lead with purpose every day.
At mile 20, the playlist cut off, and I finished the last six miles listening to the rain and my breath. I passed people and was passed. I saw someone bloodied from a fall and another being shuttled back to the start. The final three miles were brutal — my body wanted to quit. But I knew if I stopped, I wouldn’t be able to restart. So I pushed through the last 3 miles knowing Hailey Hugo, and Peppa would be waiting to see me cross the finish line- wet, soggy, and still standing!
