Hello Huskies! October is Breast Cancer Awareness month! Let’s discuss early prevention and signs and symptoms to know.

Aggressive forms of breast cancer are most common in people under 40. This makes informed prevention all the more important! Risk factors include:
• Family History
• High BMI
• Estrogen or progesterone treatment
• Early menstruation
• Alcohol consumption
• BRCA1/BRCA2 gene mutation (or first degree relative with mutation)
Signs and symptoms to know:
• Swelling/lump in breast, chest, or armpit area
• Unusual discharge from ni**le, or inversion/rash around ni**le
• Change in shape or color of breast
• Puckering or dimpling of skin
If you notice these symptoms persist, check in with a doctor!
Lastly, it is good to know the different types of clinical exams related to breast cancer:

Genetic Testing: Done to identify genetic mutations that increase risk (such as BRCA1/2).
Clinical Breast Exam: Physical exam for lumps as a form of early detection.
Mammography: An X-ray examination of the breasts. High risk people should begin yearly mammograms at age 30. Average risk people should begin at age 40.
Breast Ultrasound: Further investigates breast abnormalities detected in mammogram.
Core Biopsy: Procedure where a small tissue sample is removed to diagnose breast cancer after breast abnormalities detected in mammogram.
