A new study provides more evidence that minimizing medications is important for healthy aging. Using data from the Adult Changes in Thought (ACT) Study, the researchers found that greater cumulative use of these medications was linked to significant declines in physical performance. A study led by Gregory Simon, MD, MPH, found that the risk of self-harm was not lower after people started taking buprenorphine for opioid use disorder. This likely reflects frequent discontinuation and the high risk of self-harm or overdose after ending treatment, underscoring the need to improve treatment continuity. https://www.clinicalkey.com/ #!/content/journal/1-s2.0-S0163834325001355

A new paper from the Adult Changes in Thought (ACT) Study was featured on the cover of the current issue of the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. The researchers leveraged the ACT Study’s rich historic data on participants’ physical function over time to explore links between trajectories of functional health and physical activity, sitting time, and sleep patterns in later life. The results emphasized that the relationship between physical function and these behaviors is bidirectional — that is, better function may improve activity and vice versa. This was especially true for more intense physical activity. These findings support the call for interventions to promote physical activity earlier in life to preserve both physical function and the ability to engage in physical activity as people age. https://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/22/5
