Preparing for Cold and Flu Season with Essential Oils

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are concentrated extracts that have been distilled from aromatic trees, herbs and grasses. They are located in leaves, stems, fruits, roots, flowers and bark of different plants. The essential oils are responsible for the plants's unique aroma.

Some of the most powerful anti-microbials known today

Essential oils have been used in perfume making for a long time. It is easy to overlook the important fact that essential oils are some of the most powerful anti-microbials known today.

Don't wait until you get sick

You don't have to wait until you are sick to take advantage of the healing benefits of the oils. Most essential oils are antiseptic and bactericides, which will inhibit bacterial growth. Some oils are also anti-fungal and antiviral, so you can see why they are beneficial during flu season. Essential oils can help support the immune system to fight away those dreaded sniffles, colds and flu bugs. Using essential oils such as Cinnamon, Clove, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon and Thyme all deter the growth of viruses and make them an excellent natural alternative this time of year.

Join us and learn how to enhance your immune system naturally, with safe and effective doTERRA essential oils. We will cover the basics as well as allow you the opportunity to experience several different oils first hand. This class is free, but space is limited so please RSVP to loricall.doterra@gmail.com.

Here’s another reason to focus on improving your health naturally (and avoiding pharmaceutical painkillers when possible):

A new study on opioid prescription use between 2009 and 2013 conducted by pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts found that while the overall use of opioid painkillers has fallen, people being prescribed the drugs are using them chronically and at higher doses. Given the addiction potential of these medications, they should not be used lightly. Read more about the study and doctors' reactions to the findings in the New York Times article, "Patients Prescribed Narcotic Painkillers Use More of Them for Longer, Study Finds" (published December 9, 2014):

Express Scripts says that nearly half the people who took opioids for more than 30 days in the study’s first year were still using them three years later.

It’s getting hot out there—here are a few ways to help you beat the heat, summarized from a recent HuffPost Healthy Living online article (“7 Scientific Ways To Beat The Heat,” August 2, 2014):

1. Seek the heat (seriously):
Spending more time outside in hot weather can help your body acclimate. Of course, you don’t want to overdo it, but go ahead and get out there. Just consider it training.

2. Work out:
People who are aerobically fit generally handle heat better than those who are not, because regular exertion helps to decrease your resting core temperature. Plus, when you sweat, the evaporation of moisture from your sweat will make you feel cooler.

3. Find a cool spot near the plants:
Besides blocking sun, plants soak up moisture from the soil and exhale it through their leaves. Think of it as natural air conditioning.

4. Unplug:
Turn off the lights—better yet, get rid of incandescent bulbs altogether and replace with fluorescent lights, which give off a lower amount of heat.

What tips do you have for keeping cool in summer?

06/23/2014

Summer’s here—don’t let a headache get you down. Here are 6 tips for getting rid of common types of headaches. Most come from a recently published Women’s Health article (“7 Ways to Cure a Headache,” June 2, 2014), and all offer natural approaches to headache relief.

1. Hydrate:
Even mild dehydration can cause a headache. Drink water throughout the day.

2. Eat:
If you missed a meal, a drop in blood sugar may have brought on your headache.

3. Look away from the screen:
Staring at a computer screen for too long at a time can strain your eyes, and the light from a screen can also exacerbate a migraine.

4. Stretch:
Relieve the tension in your neck and shoulders that might be the cause of your headache.

5. Drink coffee or tea:
Scientific research has shown a connection between drinking caffeinated beverages and relieving tension headaches. But go for just a cup (studies have also linked the regular or large consumption of coffee or tea with an increased risk of headaches).

6. Get adjusted:
Spinal manipulation can often provide relief for headaches originating in the neck, and without the side effects of medication. You can also ask your chiropractic doctor for advice on posture and exercises that can help improve your alignment and reduce muscle tension.

Here’s to a headache-free summer.

Native American superfoods: Researches at Virginia Tech and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have published a paper in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis analyzing the nutritional value of 10 wild plants that formed part of the traditional diet of Northern Plains tribes. The study, discussed today in an article on NPR.org ("Native Americans Have Superfoods Right Under Their Feet,” June 2, 2014), recognized the healthy nutrients of the following plants, which were harvested from three Native American reservations in North Dakota:

• cattail broad leaf shoots
• chokecherries
• beaked hazelnuts
• lamb's-quarters
• plains prickly pear
• prairie turnips
• stinging nettles
• wild plums
• raspberries
• rose hips

Steamed lamb’s-quarters topped the researchers' list as a superfood, providing a significant amount of the daily recommended intake of thiamin (60%) vitamin B6 (40%), calcium (60%) and magnesium (70%).

Studies like this one, along with growing trends like the foraging movement, may suggest that more people are becoming aware of the benefits of natural approaches to health and nutrition, and are looking to people with closer ties to nature for insight and learning.
