I’m honored to have my writing on Equitable Economics included in the most recent journal of the .idarolfinstitute.

Making Rolfing Structural Integration accessible to more people is a passion of mine. I believe it is absolutely at the heart and mission of our work. In this article, I outline ideas to implement more equitable economic models into one’s practice, and pose tough questions about how we think about money in general.
I am thrilled to discuss this topic with anyone interested. Send me a DM or email me!

Honestly, the first thought when I saw this quotation was ā€œDang, that’s a lot of pressure! Not only do I have to keep my body healthy for myself but for the cosmos too?!ā€

Then I remembered that I have been conditioned to believe that a for a woman in America means: skinny, hungry, toned, plucked, waxed, small, etc. I’m sure each of us could fill in the blanks with what we’ve been conditioned to think healthy is.

What if, instead, just for today or even just for the next 2 minutes *healthy* = breathing, meeting yourself where you are, resting, calling a loved one, turning off the news, or even closing this app and going outside!

Let’s be kind to ourselves. That’s healthy to me.

p.s. I do love the message. We’re part of the cosmos. When we tend our plants and keep them healthy, it makes us feel good, right? Works both ways!

Photo ID: Quote over a forest photo background that reads: ā€œKeeping your body healthy is an expression of gratitude to the whole cosmos--the trees, the clouds, everything.ā€ Said by Thich Nhat Hanh.

Washington State recently ā€œreopened.ā€ On top of the normal frenetic, excited energy of summer, I can feel both the desire to expand, be social, go out, alongside the trepidation of removing the protective shells we’ve necessarily built around ourselves over the last year+. Not to mention those of us who don’t feel safe, or have health conditions that make emerging from the pandemic extremely complicated, if not impossible.

Our Rolfing sessions can be particularly helpful during this moment to , calming and balancing the whole of you to feel energized to pursue whatever level of ā€œreopenā€ you feel comfortable with!

Body in Practice Rolfing is considered a healthcare setting in WA. Therefore, we’ll continue to mask-up for the foreseeable future, even if we’re both fully vaccinated. Safety is our community responsibility.

One of my favorite things about being back in the is access to hiking. It helps me feel grounded to be out amongst the trees and chirping birds, and away from my desk (yes, I have a desk) and the loudness of the city.

has helped me to soak up nature even more as I don’t have too look at the ground too much as I follow the trail. Sound insane? Since I receive regularly, not only is my body loose and spacious, able to move easily--but my brain’s maps of where my body is in space are ā€œupdated.ā€ My is on lock. I know where my feet are and what’s under them.

So, if you want to hike and actually *enjoy* the scenery--not to mention how your neck might hurt after looking down AND carrying that backpack--contact me!

Texting, typing, mouse-ing. We all do it and our forearms get tighter and tighter.

Check out how my client’s wrists are levitated off the table in the before picture (peep the shadows). His forearms were so restricted from work and exercise that the fascia felt like layers of tight saran wrap around his muscles.

After a few minutes of work on his tissue and having my client move his wrist, hand and fingers, his forearms were able to release and relax on the table.

So many of our activities involve repetitive motion and gripping. can help you find relief and functionality in daily life--whether work or play!

Description: A before photo of a client lying faceup on the table with significant space between the table and his forearms and wrists above an after photo of his wrists and forearms lying significantly closer to the table. Title reads ā€œforearm transformation.ā€

Rolfers have jokes too! šŸ˜„
Today is Dr. Rolf’s birthday. These images are of her working at nearly 80 years old!
I feel a lot of ways about Dr. Rolf. I respect her as a woman who earned her Biochemistry PhD from Columbia in the 1920s(!), and who then gave birth to her own system of bodywork. But like many historical figures, there are unsavory stories about her that problematize her legacy.
For some time she didn’t want to train women because they weren’t strong enough or their hands were too small. An article written in the past year quotes her as saying Rolfers shouldn’t bother working on African Americans. Her ideas about how a body ā€œshouldā€ be presuppose an ideal based on ideas.
I am uneasy about gurus in any context. I have colleagues that have photos of Dr. Rolf in their office. Her face watches over each classroom at the Rolf Institute. While some believe we should practice Rolfing as she created it, as a scientist I think she would have wanted us to respond to new information about fascia, the nervous system, etc.
This is a brief example/distillation of a complex issue. But when people ask me about the history of Rolfing, we have to be honest about how her ideas filter into our present and our practices. We have to liberate ourselves from the ā€œideallyā€ and the ā€œshouldsā€ and the ā€œnormals.ā€
So, to all the people out there that have figureheads they have mixed feelings about, I’m right there with you. To my clients, know that your body has an inherent strength and order--and that’s the legacy of Dr. Rolf I choose to share with you in our .

🌸One of the best things about returning to my hometown of is seeing the Rhododendrons blooming at the Arboretum. 🌳 They remind me it’s Spring and time to get outside.
I can feel the pent up energy to get out from the whole city. I’ve been seeing a lot of folks lately who are ready to get back to the activities they love. can help you do that safely, juicing up your tissue to get you back out on the trail, the field, in the garden, etc. Because we ALL know the feeling of jumping back into our old (ahem, pre-pandemic) and wished we’d gone slower, or aren’t able to recover as quickly as we used to. I’m here to support you in doing what you love!

I love my clients, and I am so grateful to do what I do! Thank you, Sterling!

Katy is an incredible bodyworker! I feel lucky to have found her! She is fully present and curious at each session, tuning in to what is going on in my body in the moment. I feel truly cared for and fully seen in the space that she creates during each treatment.
•
Before Katy, I’d had weeks of intense pain and had already gone to multiple practitioners and tried different therapies. It wasn’t until I worked with her that I felt a significant shift in my body. This shift set me on the path to recovery. Before her, I felt stuck, and Katy was able to put my body back into motion. I also appreciated that throughout the treatment, she expertly guides you through different movements and breathwork, checking in to make sure that my body was responding well. I highly recommend Katy!!

Next Saturday, and I will facilitate a discussion about how to make our work more accessible economically. We welcome practitioners—bodyworkers or otherwise!
•
From sliding scale models to pro bono sessions, share your experience and learn from colleagues what's worked for them.
•
We will also anchor this discussion within a larger one around and consider economic models from other fields. Together, we hope to offer both practical ideas and some historical background.

How often did your parent/family member/teacher, etc. tell you to stand or sit up straight? It's a refrain I hear frequently in my office. Far as we may be from childhood or those people, their voices may be in our heads reminding us ā€œstand up straight!ā€ or ā€œdon’t slouchā€!
⬩
I promise I will never do this to you. Here’s why:
OUR SPINES ARE MEANT TO HAVE CURVES! 怰ļøć€°ļøć€°ļø
⬩
The curvature of our spines (as well as the fascial and muscular system attached to our spines!) allow for compression, expansion, and kinetic energy to travel through our bodies as we move, and to keep us upright as we sit or stand.
⬩
Try to ā€œstraightenā€ out your back for a second. Some call this Military posture. How does that make your body feel? Does your back suddenly hurt? Do you feel a shift in your weight? How about your breath? Probably not that great, huh?
⬩
By releasing tension and movement education I help people to sit and stand in supported ways. We can be and feel tall and open and without doing further harm to our bodies or slouching. It is possible!
⬩
So, let this old habit die hard and contact me for more info.

Zoom fatigue? More like ā€œemotionally-draining, anxiety-inducing, exhausting Zoomā€!
⬩
New neuroscience research, as well as applications of older research, tells us that the excessive time many of us are spending on videoconferencing these days is doing a real number on our nervous systems (NS). I often feel more tired after several hours of Zoom than actually working on my client’s bodies!
⬩
I am *always* talking about the NS with my clients. Our brains, nerves, and senses need as much or more attention as the rest of your body. Here are some Rolfing-inspired tips to prevent death by Zoom:

1ļøāƒ£ Get up between meetings. Refresh your senses to the room around you. Soften your gaze. Sense how big the room is, the temperature, the smells, etc. If you can walk around the block, even better.

2ļøāƒ£ The NS registers intense, close-up eye contact as stressful. Literally distance yourself from the screen. Can you set your monitor way back from your keyboard and mouse or use bluetooth versions?

3ļøāƒ£ If you can ā€œhide self-view,ā€ do it! We’re not used to seeing ourselves. Our NS’s don’t like it and it’s easy to become self-critical.

4ļøāƒ£ If you’re in a meeting you don’t have to actually watch, close your eyes, turn away from the screen, or walk around!
⬩
Think about it this way: our nervous systems just haven’t evolved quickly enough from hunter-gatherer days to deal with the amount of focused work time, lack of movement, and prolonged eye contact! Our brains are registering this stuff as stress or threats, and can easily put us into fight/flight/freeze.
⬩
How do you feel after video calls? What do you notice in your body? Your eyes? Do you feel like you can return to ā€œreal lifeā€ afterward in a way you’d like to? Try some of these tips and let me know how they feel. Tag a friend who needs them, too!

āœ… 1st Dose of the COVID Vaccine! āœ…
•
I am extremely grateful and relieved that I was able to schedule an appointment and receive my first dose yesterday. It feels like a big step in the right direction towards protecting the my health + yours!
•
My colleagues and I have been practicing since things re-opened this past summer without incident, thankfully. I will still be wearing KN95 masks and face shields for all my sessions.
•
The milestone we crossed this week in the U.S. of 500,000 who have passed due to coronavirus weighs heavy on my heart. My thoughts go out to you and yours that have lost loved ones, as well as our inspirational public figures.
•
My hope with my work is always to put as much compassion and love out into the world as possible. I look forward to doing that in the near future with you in my new office.
