Happy Halloween, Blessed Samhain, and Feliz día de los muertos!
This is a powerful time of year for gathering and connecting - it’s a time to celebrate where we have come from and prepare to get cozy for the dark months ahead.
Recently a group of our Templers gathered together to craft some kitchen medicine to celebrate and prepare a tonic to support our immune systems through the winter months.
We each brought a few ingredients and a vessel and chopped the afternoon away to create 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙚 𝘾𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧 - a quintessential example of “Food As Medicine”
This tangy apple cider based ferment includes spicy root vegetables, herbs, and citrus to create a fiery blend that boasts immune supporting benefits. This tonic is commonly used to warm the body and aid digestion - and with all that horseradish it will clear your sinuses!
Used and crafted across the globe in assorted concoctions you will find as varied recipes for this tonic as there are people making it.
The basic recipe is as follows:
- Herbs + Apple Cider Vinegar = Fire Cider
- (we used horseradish, turmeric, ginger, garlic, onion, jalapeño, rose hips, assorted citrus fruits, rosemary & thyme)
- Let it sit in a cool dark place for 4-6 weeks, gently agitating every day, then strain out the solids and add honey.
- Use as desired ~1 tablespoon a day - drink it straight, in a shrub, or pour over foods as as dressing
