“Spot” Scalp Skin Cancer: Prevention & Early Detection Tips

At WCD, we’re often part of the healing journeys of clients experiencing medically related hair loss from chemotherapy, alopecia, medications, or other illnesses. Recently, we’ve seen an increase in new clients with skin cancer on the scalp. That led us to a bigger question: are these cases part of a broader trend?

Although much of the data from the NIH and CDC is not current, other sources indicate that in recent years Washington’s melanoma rate has been about 20% higher than the national average, with global projections showing a continued rise. Contributing factors include improved detection and diagnosis, climate and environmental changes, and longer life expectancy, since older populations are more susceptible.

Skittles was almost as thrilled as William to see Sue Carette at WCD this week!

Back in 2017, William couldn’t resist adopting this one-of-a-kind metal horse sculpture from Sue on Vashon Island, and Skittles has been charming our clients ever since.

Thanks to Sue & Coco for stopping by!

More on William's history with Christopher Brooker and "The Thatch" - from the blog.

As Vidal casually chatted with me my only thought was, “What is he thinking about this haircut I’m doing?”, which by now had dried enough to begin to take a specific shape. The hair on top was still wet and was lying somewhat flat, while the hair at the bottom was even more dry and beginning t...

This afternoon at the salon, I had the rare and unexpected privilege of watching this video with William Collier - a demonstration by one of the true masters, Christopher Brooker. Brooker was William’s primary instructor at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in London, where both he and Gene Juarez, together received the advanced training for their legendary careers.

What struck me most was seeing William light up with the same energy and passion he must’ve had as a young student. We paused the video often as he shared vivid stories about Christopher, offering insights into his brilliance, the precision of his work, and the artistic values that profoundly influenced William’s own approach to the craft.

It quickly began to feel like being invited into a personal masterclass, one full of reverence, memory, and inspiration. I left feeling moved, not just by the artistry, but by the lasting power of great teaching and that elusive spark of inspiration that comes from witnessing such mastery. I’m grateful I was there for it and felt compelled to share, if only to honor and commemorate the moment.
