“Spot” Scalp Skin Cancer: Prevention & Early Detection Tips
At WCD, we’re often part of the healing journeys of clients experiencing medically related hair loss from chemotherapy, alopecia, medications, or other illnesses. Recently, we’ve seen an increase in new clients with skin cancer on the scalp. That led us to a bigger question: are these cases part of a broader trend?
Although much of the data from the NIH and CDC is not current, other sources indicate that in recent years Washington’s melanoma rate has been about 20% higher than the national average, with global projections showing a continued rise. Contributing factors include improved detection and diagnosis, climate and environmental changes, and longer life expectancy, since older populations are more susceptible.

A - Asymmetry: One half of the mole or lesion looks different from the other half.
B - Border: The borders are irregular, notched, or blurred.
C - Color: The color is varied, with shades of brown, black, red, white, or blue.
D - Diameter: The lesion is larger than 6 millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser).
E - Evolving: The lesion has changed in size, shape, color, or texture over time.
