Independence Day weekend seemed like a great time to reflect on four years of blogging, set against a backdrop of photos from six hikes over twelve days.

Blog post 180 is longer than usual. It's a 3,000-word look at how four years of blogging, hiking, and leading have shaped the way I see movement, nature, writing, and change. It’s part memoir, part field guide, part love letter to change. Scroll to what speaks to you or savor each section slowly. I did while writing it. Enjoy.

This personal essay is a 3,000-word look at how four years of blogging, hiking, and leading have shaped how I see nature, movement, and life.

During the past two weeks of whirlwind activity, what stands out in hundreds of photos and five hikes are those vulnerable moments that one might not post photos of. Read more about Courtenay Schurman's top five set against a backdrop of photos worth sharing from a CHS-2 hike to Pratt Lake, a stroll along the Jackson Park Golf Course with two dogs, and a hike up Mt. Si from the Teneriffe Trailhead.

During two weeks of high accomplishments, what stand out most are vulnerable moments that never make it into photographs.

My metaphorical mind has been hard at work this morning. My CHS-1 lead to Big Creek and Otter Falls this weekend and hot, humid CHS-2 lead to Rainbow and Island Lakes last week showed me a possible path forward in business.

I've recently been exploring Dr. Cobb's strategies for setting yourself up for success. He uses Mini, Plus, and Elite Wins, both laterally and vertically, and after a week of testing it on myself, I think he's onto something.

Set against a backdrop of photos from a recent hike I led to Snoqualmie Lake, Blog 177 will help you move forward, no matter what habits you want to set.

What a wild week! 3 hikes, 3 classes, a book signing, and a State track and field meet. From Wi-fi woes to wisdom and wins, this week's blog post 176 captures it all.

Sometimes the most memorable weeks aren’t the ones that go smoothly, but the ones that test our resilience and force us to look for wins.

Blog 175 shares an inside look at how one coach works to establish five good habits. We are all on parallel paths; some of us have more tools at our fingertips. Instead of asking "Why me?" ask "What can I do to move forward, today?" Set against a backdrop of recent trips to Carkeek Park and Granite Lakes.

Hikes to Oyster Dome/Lily Lake and Margaret's Way/Debbie's View earlier this week had me thinking about the way most people focus on the physical metrics of their hikes. Here I address changing variables using the acronym SERES: Speed, Endurance, Recovery, Enjoyment, and Strength. Looking for new, more effective ways to increase trail resilience? Read on.

Hikers usually concentrate on the following metrics: distance, travel time, pack weight, and total elevation gain. But if you want to improve your performance on the trail — consider five ways to vary your hiking outings. As I co-led Mountaineers hikes this week on Margaret’s Way/Debbie’s View...

https://thriveclues.com/lessons-from-the-nest-on-collaboration-and-compassion/ Three weeks of birding outings taught me a lot about wildlife and myself. In Blog 171, I share two moments on opposite ends of the spectrum and how I've been using them to move forward. Hope you enjoy some photos from this week's trips to Bridle Trails State Park and Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge.

Spring nesting season always draws my eyes upward. Towhees, chickadees, and tree swallows flit back and forth with twigs, spider webs, and moss, building carefully, imperfectly, urgently. Males are in their beautiful mating plumage. And birdsong starts as early as 5 a.m. It’s a season of imperfect...

For someone who is quite used to hiking every Tuesday, this week I tried something else: rest. From reading 4 books to watching 3 movies, mowing and chilling to birding with my dog, I gave myself time to just be, rather than do. I'm shedding the old me, one week at a time. Blog 170 is live at ThriveClues.com. https://thriveclues.com/the-power-of-shedding/

This weekend, I didn’t meet a mileage or elevation goal. But I did rest. I did connect with Mother Nature and her beautiful birds.

What do you do when you can't follow through on your intentions? This week's blog wrestles with rest and recovery versus plowing forward. Live on 3/31/25.

Sometimes, the most courageous thing we can do is pause, listen to our bodies, and trust that rest is part of the journey, too
