Odessa Brown Children's Clinic

Odessa Brown Children's Clinic OBCC Othello located in Seattle's Rainier Valley neighborhood is now open! Our Story
Odessa Brown was born in Arkansas in 1920. We’re growing!

During the Great Depression, Brown moved to Chicago and experienced some health problems, but she had difficulty obtaining the care she needed. At one visit to a Chicago area hospital, she was turned away and denied care. Brown reportedly said to the staff, "I am black and poor, but I will leave in peace so that I can keep my dignity." Years later, at the height of the civil rights era, Brown was raising her four children in Seattle when she became a community organizer. She fought to bring quality healthcare with dignity to children in the Central District through a federally funded effort to solve inner-city problems by building "model neighborhoods.” Brown died of leukemia in 1969 at age 49. When the new children's clinic opened the next year, a thankful community named the clinic in her honor. From that early beginning in 1970, when just one doctor delivered on Brown’s dream, Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic has grown into a comprehensive facility with medical, dental, mental health and nutrition services that embrace patients and families in our community. Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic is building a second location. To help us meet the growing needs of the community, we are building a second OBCC location – a bigger, new clinic near the Othello Link light rail station in Southeast Seattle’s Rainier Valley.

OBCC had a blast at the Sound Careers in Healthcare event at UW! With around 650 high school students from across the state in attendance, the energy was electric. Our team showed up in full force, with representatives from Medical, Behavioral Health, and PT/Rehab.

We spent the day leading hands-on activities and answering some seriously impressive questions. It was amazing to see so many students eager to jump right in—and of course, we did our best to convince every single one of them that pediatrics is the place to be. 😉

Safe to say the future of healthcare is in very good hands!

A new model of care—built by and for the community.
The OBCC CARE Clinic was created to support our city’s most vulnerable youth, including those impacted by trauma or abuse.
Too often, the services young people need most aren’t covered by traditional models of care or funding. That gap leaves too many behind. CARE was designed to close that gap.
Together, we’re building a clinic that provides trauma-informed wrap-around services where every young person has access to the support they deserve.

Interpreters are the unsung heroes of the clinical world, often stepping into complex situations to ensure every patient’s voice is heard. To support them, Nicolás Fernández, MD, and translator Rafael Melian have developed a new Urology Spanish Curriculum for Clinical Interpreters.

This new virtual program gives interpreters the medical context and terminology they need to support patients with greater accuracy and confidence. The program began when the team recognized a major gap: interpreters are often asked to assist in complex clinical encounters without a standard curriculum to help them prepare.

As the program continues to grow, the team is focused on expanding content and creating meaningful support that encourages interpreters to advance their skills.
