Since it’s endometriosis awareness month I’m going to present you a case. My endometriosis journey.
45 year old female CC: Menorrhagia, Dysmenorrhea, Migraines and Fibroids with stage 4 endometriosis
Pulse: choppy and wiry at times
Tongue: Dusky, swollen with SLV +4
Fukushin: Average to strong abdomen, warm, hypochondriac tension, slight water and blood pulsations, water sign, Oketsu bilaterally. Stronger on the left. After surgery no more Oketsu! Look at my normal happy tongue 👅
Tx: Prior to surgery, I managed this 10 years with Acupuncture and herbs to minimize my pain. Tao He Cheng Qi Tangx1 week, followed by GZFLW
HPI: LLQ and pelvic pain that started 12 years ago, was dx with IBS after a colonoscopy. Was told I had a small fibroid “not enough to cause pain.” I treated with Acupuncture and herbs, Me**es was always 28 days, but heavy with pain. Hard to leave the house on days 1-2, often bleeding through clothing. Pain went away after 9 months. Recently cycles have started getting closer together, pain returned, migraines increasing with extreme bloating. Kidney stones and bowel changes. Joint pain. Was gaslit by my GYN. So I asked my ND for imaging which showed 3 larger fibroids. Found a new GYN and a surgical consult. Decided to have hysterectomy. During surgery it was revealed I had stage 4 endometriosis. My organs adhered together, multiple chocolate cysts, and more fibroids that weren’t detected. Immediately post- op I felt better, dropped 10 lbs, pain was gone. 10 weeks out feeling better than ever. No IBS, no bleeding, no pain, no more joint pain.
Endometriosis is a horrible disease, often takes 7-10 years to get diagnosis. Don’t let your providers gaslight you. Be your own advocate. Ask your Acupuncturist for help. Chinese medicine can help so much with this pathology, reducing the pain, decreasing inflammation and has the ability to shrink fibroids and clear endometriosis. There are times we need to refer out for example if the fibroids are in the wall, or over 5 cm or if the endometriosis is stage 3-4. It’s not a failure if you have to refer your patients! As Chinese medicine providers, we can increase quality of life and buy our patients time.
