The start of the school year is right around the corner! Now is a good time to figure out if your child needs an appointment, as September visits tend to book up fast!
Remember to look at the date of your child's last annual exam, if they have not had an annual exam in the last year then they are due for a full physical. If they have, they may just need a short vaccine appointment. If you're not sure whether you kiddo is up to date on their vaccines, check out MyIRmobile.com to see their current vaccine records.
If they are in need of a sport physical form, these can be completed at a Well Child Check. Be sure to fill out the patient portion, and bring them to your appointment. If your child has already had their annual visit, you can share these forms through the Charm patient portal for the provider to complete without an appointment.
Wishing everyone a healthy and happy closing of summer and start to a new school chapter! 😊⛅️📚🍎

Another heat wave is coming and it’s a great reminder of the importance of proper hydration, and has us craving a refreshing treat. When increased sweating occurs due to heat or physical exertion, it is essential to replenish fluids and electrolytes. Many will opt for a sports drink in these cases, but we would like to highlight the benefits of utilizing natural ingredients to create a similar effect at home!
Incorporating coconut water, fruit, citrus, salt and herbs is a great way to add zest and nutrients to your water. Additionally, aloe vera and chia seeds can be used to create a more engaging texture for those who struggle to consume plain water.
At-home Gatorade combos:
watermelon, lime, mint, salt;
cucumber, blackberry, lime, honey, salt;
coconut water, blueberry, lemon, honey, salt;
strawberry, raspberry, lemon, salt.
Make sure to use a mineral-dense salt for optimal hydration.
Enjoy! 💦🫐🍉🍋🌿

Wildfire season is upon us and will continue into early fall. With the growing presence of wildfire smoke in our state, we wanted to take a moment to provide info. and resources to our community!

Wildfire smoke is made of small particles and when inhaled causes irritation to the nose, throat, and lungs, which then your body has to process and detox from. Wildfire smoke can exacerbate chronic lung conditions and is particularly hard on children and elderly.

Talk to your doctor about ways to protect against the smoke and when and how to be cautious. Washington State Department of Health (DOH), the National Weather Service, and other local and regional agencies offer great resources and information to protect people’s health. You can also check the Air Quality Index in your area to assess general risk on a day to day basis.

Dr. Nassim’s Herbal Highlight: Astragalus, Camellia sinensis, Grindellia (WA state local), Cleavers (WA state local).

In celebration of AAIPI Month, we would like to honor Dr. Margaret Chung, known as “Mom” by many.

Margaret was a first generation Chinese American, born in Santa Barbara, California in 1889. She graduated from the University of Southern California’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1916 with an M.D., becoming the first known American born Chinese woman physician in the US. She was just 26 years old, and the only woman and only person of color in her entire graduating class.

Shortly after graduating, she applied to be a medical missionary, but was rejected due to her race and rumors of her sexuality. Despite the barriers of institutionalized racism and societal prejudice, Dr. Chung went on to become a surgical nurse, and opened her own practice in San Francisco's Chinatown. In 1925, she helped establish the first Western hospital there leading its OB/GYN and pediatric units.

In 1937, Dr. Chung volunteered to serve as a front-line surgeon during the Sino-Japanese War. Instead, she was asked to secretly recruit pilots for a unit that would become famous as the “Flying Tigers.” She treated her recruits as their doctor, but also hosted them at her home for large weekly dinners, and connected them to jobs within the military. Her network grew to over 1,200 men, who referred to her as “Mom Chung”. Her influence and work for the allied war effort received media coverage that was seen as a national example of patriotism.

After being denied her application to join the Navy herself, Margaret coordinated the creation and helped pass the legislation that would create W.A.V.E.S. (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), the WWII women’s branch of the United States Naval Reserve. Although W.A.V.E.S. was signed into law, and never would have existed without Margaret’s powerful influence; she was rejected from serving in WAVES herself and denied credit for its creation.

We encourage you to read more about Dr. Margaret Chung's life and influence, and to seek out stories from the AAIPI diaspora. She is but one example of a powerful force who built a legacy of community through her will to care for others and to fight for inclusion.
