Do you ever find it hard to get that extra motivation and drive to get things done? You can thank dopamine for that! (Well, low dopamine actually!) It’s also know as the “reward neurotransmitter” and plays a role in motivation, focus, memory and wakefulness.

While neurotransmitters tend to be a down-stream effect of neuroinflammatory states and toxicity, it can be helpful to know our personal levels of dopamine in relation to the other major neurochemicals.

Symptomology is never clear enough causation for a diagnosis, but addressing these “common, but not normal” states if a great first step in understanding your brain chemistry.

Above are some common down-stream effects!

Mark “Mr. Noots” Effinger joined the podcast this week to talk about ways we can optimize brain function and support specific neurotransmitters, including dopamine, serotonin and GABA. Optimizing our diet and sleep are always the foundation, but we can also incorporate specific nutrients to boost dopamine such as vitamin D, gingko biloba and nootropics.

Can you hack your SIRT1 gene to live longer? SIRT1 is the first of the sirtuins, proteins that decrease inflammation, oxidative stress, and DNA damage. If you have low SIRT1 activity, you may be more susceptible to age-related diseases. The cool part is you can discover which variants you have through services like and then learn the best biohacks for you!

A few of the biohacks that can make an impact include:

*Exercise - it directly increases SIRT1 in the liver, muscles, and heart

*Cold Exposure - it can activate SIRT1 by increasing cAMP, while sun exposure can activate SIRT1 by increasing nitric oxide

*Omega-3 fatty acid DHA - one of the best dietary activators of SIRT1 and is found in oily fish like salmon and anchovies

*Pterostilbene - an antioxidant found in blueberries, which is closely related to resveratrol, but may be more bioavailable and more effective. Also works well in combination with nicotinamide ribosome.

Cheers to slowing down the aging process!

Research in the anti-aging and longevity space is rapidly changing and it’s a very exciting time in the scientific community. What if we can truly slow the aging process and increase our healthspan (the number of years we are in good health)?

Dr. Morgan Levine, author of True Age: Cutting-Edge Research to Help Turn Back the Clock, joined the podcast this week for a fascinating discussion on testing our biological age and the top biohacks for increasing healthspan & longevity.

We’ve made a ton of advancements in light technology over the last century, and when used correctly, light can have a powerful effect on our health and vitality.

We’ve all experienced what good lighting and bad lighting can feel like. Like how you feel when you step outside in the morning and see the sun! Or maybe you’ve been walking through the mall with crappy overhead lighting. Light has a major impact on us and when optimized we see…

🧬 Happiness 😊- One of the greatest biohacks for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is exposure to bright blue light first thing in the morning.

🧬 Better productivity - Blue light during the day is stimulating & energizing, increasing both alertness and productivity.

🧬 Deeper Sleep - Reducing blue light exposure at night induces the release of melatonin and gets us ready for a good night of sleep. While red light is soothing and relaxing.

🧬 Enhanced Recovery - With red light therapy we get mitochondrial support, which in turn helps cells repair themselves and speeds up the recovery process.

🧬 Stronger Circadian Rhythm - supporting our internal 24 hour clock is essential for optimal health and one of the best ways to do so is by timing optimal light exposure throughout the day.

HOLD UP!

Have you worked some actively recovery into your week yet? Don’t worry it’s only Tuesday 😜 but every day is a good day for working-IN.

Generally working-IN , as opposed to working-OUT is more parasympathetic and anabolic, but that doesn’t mean you won’t feel productive and accomplished in your body.

Mobility primes the muscles and joints for harder work.

Mobility allows the nervous system to get the down-regulation it needs.

Mobility feels…. REALLY GOOD, especially when dosed in intentionally and consistently.

Today is a great day to begin 🤗

Americans, on average, spend approximately 90% of their time indoors. One might argue that optimizing indoor lighting is one of the most important biohacks!

On this week’s episode of The Biohacker Babes, we chatted with Talia Ram of Lumiram! We didn’t realize we knew so little about lighting, and healthy lighting to be specific.

Light has the power to make you FEEL! How we see = how we feel

Just like most biohacks and health habits, we want to mimic nature. So if we want to mimic the light that comes from our natural source (the sun ☀️), we have to go with… incandescent!

Just as the sun radiates heat, producing the visible light spectrum we can see, an incandescent lightbulb does much the same thing.

When you think of an Edison bulb with a glowing filament inside, that is incandescent. It’s also low flicker and low EMF, making it a healthier option than LEDs and fluorescents.

Dear July, you’ve been just delightful! I’m overwhelmed with the love and support AND CELEBRATION I’ve received this week. What’s even more magical is spending every single day with this very special man by my side. He insisted on giving ME a gift on his birthday last month - his love language and generosity is unmatched, and continues to flow abundantly. We are both born on the 9th off the month (not the same year! he is old 😜), we celebrate together, now and forever. This is for sure a birthday to remember. Thank you - I love you so!!!

Optimal wellness and absence of dis-ease all comes down to balance within the body. Health is found on a spectrum, as are all of our vital systems and relationships within.

From surviving to thriving, the body checks and balances our hormones, micronutrients, inflammatory and oxidation markers, toxins and more.

When assessing biomarkers on a lab test, we can’t just look at isolated values - we need the full picture!

Here are some relationships to consider:

🧬 Iron / Ferritin
🧬 Free / Metabolized Cortisol
🧬 Active / Inactive Vitamin D
🧬 Inorganic / Methyl Mercury
🧬 Copper / Zinc

This week on the Biohacker Babes podcast, we chat with Dr. Joel Rosen, creator of thetruthaboutadrenalfatigue.com, about the many myths and misconceptions in the functional health space.

Happy 4th of July Biohackers! We hope you all have a fun, happy & healthy celebration today!

Don't forget our favorite healthy holiday tips:

RELAX! Find some time to relax and reset your nervous system. Whether this is a few minutes of box breathing, a 15-minute meditation practice or maybe a 20-minute cat nap, go for it! 🧘‍♀️

PRIORITIZE PROTEIN, FAT & FIBER! By getting these in first, you will stabilize your blood sugar and avoid the post-holiday blood sugar rollercoaster. Your body will handle that cupcake completely differently when you have it after protein, fat & fiber.

HYDRATE! Aim for at least half your body weight in ounces of water and if you're consuming any caffeine or alcohol, you'll want to drink an extra glass or two! 💦

Enjoy the holiday! 🎉

The magic of women in community in conversation…

a beautiful opportunity for women to share their stories, their wisdom, their personal challenges and sources of inspiration.

I’ve always been a Learner and have a bit of an addiction for textbooks and studies.

But this is the alchemy we can’t find in a book… Women coming together to empower and learn from one another, there’s nothing like it!

What a blast it was to gather with this very special group of ladies this week .prtl 🙌🏼

Shoutout to the incredible for opening her doors, her arms and her heart wide open! 💞 To for creating delicious food magic✨and my Retreat co-host extraordinaire for inspiring this evening and traveling down from Boston to make it happen ⚡️

There is so much more to come! Check out .co for all women’s retreat offerings and upcoming events 💪🏻
