Guatemala Village Health

Guatemala Village Health Empowering Guatemalan communities to live healthier lives We are a 501c3 non-profit organization.

We are a group of health workers, engineers, teachers, administrators, college students and kids, working to help improve the health of a group of villages in the Departamento Izabal in Guatemala. We started in 2008 and continue to return with teams of volunteers twice a year. At each visit we update community assessments, conduct health care screenings, provide clinical care and health education and work at ongoing village improvement projects.

🇬🇹 Happy Guatemalan Independence Day!

Today, we send warm wishes and solidarity to our beloved Guatemalan community — both here in the U.S. and across Guatemala — as we celebrate the strength, beauty, and vibrant cultures of the Guatemalan people, who give this day its meaning. 💙🇬🇹💙

This past Friday, we gathered in Seattle for a small but meaningful celebration. Together, we shared delicious food, danced to music by DJ Johnny, and honored Guatemala’s rich heritage with:

🎶 A flag ceremony and the Guatemalan national anthem
👗 A fashion show of traditional dress from different departamentos
💃🏽 A baile folklórico lesson by Emcee Luis Amado of Amigos de Seattle Radio
🎉 Community, laughter, and love

Dinner included pollo guisado with cilantro rice, sopa de frijoles, tostadas de salsa roja, ensalada mixta, and frescos of tamarindo and rosa de Jamaica — with a dessert table full of treats like Gabi’s famous tres leches cake!

Thank you to everyone who helped make this celebration possible — and to all who carry Guatemala in their hearts today and every day.

💙 Thank you, Costa’s crew!

We’re still feeling the love from Tuesday night’s dinner benefit at Costa’s Greek Restaurant — and we want to thank everyone who showed up, shared a meal, and supported GVH. With about 45 folks in the room, it felt like a true friend-raiser — filled with great food, warm conversations, and deep community care.

Special thanks to Costa’s, a U-District institution since 1975, for donating 20% of the evening’s proceeds to support our work in rural Guatemala. And shoutout to our board VP Carolyn Bain, who used to work at Costa’s back in the ’90s and helped bring this event to life!

Your presence meant everything. ¡Gracias!

🌟 We’re still celebrating — and still fundraising!

In the whirlwind of the past month, we didn’t get a chance to say this loud enough:
💥 THANK YOU to everyone who made our Health, Hope, and Progress Gala such a success!

Together, we raised $105,000 to fund community-led healthcare, nutrition, and public health work across rural Guatemala. Your generosity fuels everything we do.

Let’s keep it going. Join us tomorrow night for an easy (and delicious) way to support GVH:

🎤 Meet Larry J. Snyder — Auctioneer, Coffee Guy, and Friend of Guatemala

We’re honored to welcome Larry J. Snyder back as the auctioneer for this year’s GVH Gala!

Larry’s connection to Guatemala runs deep. Years ago, he spent time in Pastores, where he helped build homes alongside local families — but came home with something more than calloused hands. He writes:

“When you go into service with the intent of doing something good for someone else, more often than not, you come away changed.”

Larry is also a longtime advocate for ethical sourcing and Latin American coffee growers. He’s worked with Starbucks and others to uplift producers across the region — blending community connection with big-picture impact.

He’s a TEDx speaker, MOTH storyteller, and three-time author who understands the power of stories to bring people together. Last year, Larry brought heart and energy to the GVH stage, helping us raise vital funds for rural health care — and we’re thrilled to welcome him back.

🌟 Meet Liset Olivet – Director of Aldeas Sanas Guatemala

We’re thrilled to welcome Liset Olivet, Executive Director of Aldeas Sanas Guatemala, to Seattle for this year’s Health, Hope, and Progress Gala!

She holds degrees in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, and International Commerce — and is deeply committed to building sustainable health solutions in rural Guatemala.

Working closely with GVH’s Director of Programs, Liset helps lead technical, operational, and community-based initiatives across the villages we serve.

We can't wait for you to meet her in person and hear her reflections from the field!

Thursday, April 3 – Capacitación de Promotores y Comadronas

The final day of the Spring 2025 jornada brought together community health workers from 15 villages across the region for a day of training and skill-building at the GVH health post in Chinachabilchoch.

In this part of Guatemala, rural healthcare depends on the leadership of local promotores de salud (health promoters) and comadronas (traditional midwives) — trusted community members who provide essential care year-round, in their own languages, and often in hard-to-reach places.

Most villages in this region have two promotores — one man and one woman — many of whom are bilingual in Q’eqchi’ and Spanish. They are often joined by 2-3 comadronas who support prenatal care, birth, and postpartum health.

For this capacitación, the group divided into two:
— The promotores met in the school to practice vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, oxygen saturation, blood glucose) and review their roles and responsibilities within their villages. They also received equipment to take home — so they can provide care in their communities, not just at the clinic.

— The comadronas met in the aldea’s old church with GVH staff to review prenatal care, identifying high-risk pregnancies, and supporting safe deliveries.

Together, about 70 people gathered — from Chinachabilchoch, Chabilchoch, Semanzana, Seacacar Arriba, Seacacar Abajo, Nimlabenque, Chinabenque, Esperanza Túnico, San Marcos, Ceibita, Marcajam, Saquiquib, Zapotal, Tikalito, and Nuevo Nacimiento Sexan.

GVH staff prepared lunch for everyone — a small act of care for those who care for so many.

It was a fitting way to close the jornada — honoring the knowledge, dedication, and leadership already present in these communities.

🧑‍🏫✨ Wednesday, April 2 – Capacitación del Equipo

After a week of clinic days in the aldeas, Wednesday was set aside for capacitación del equipo (team training) at Hotel Viñas del Lago, near Río Dulce. This was a dedicated time and space for reflection, learning, and connection among the teams that carry this work forward all year.

This wasn’t just about the jornada — the medical team and projects team of Aldeas Sanas Guatemala are working every day in Santiago and in the aldeas, providing care, health education, and community support long after the U.S. volunteers head home.

The morning focused on open conversation — sharing what’s working well, what could be improved, and how to keep building stronger communication and collaboration across all parts of the organization.

There was also practical training on using the electronic medical record (EMR), especially for managing chronic diseases. A new update this year: The EMR will now also include information about the families participating in community health projects — like permaculture, smokeless stoves, and composting toilets — allowing for better tracking and follow-up all in one place.

In the afternoon, teams divided into smaller groups for focused training. The projects team worked on strategies for health education, community engagement, and improving the delivery of their development projects. The medical team worked on clinical skills — including how to respond to emergencies during pregnancy, how to identify high-risk pregnancies, and how to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients and community members.

It was a day of listening, learning, and recommitting to the shared work of community health — both in the clinics and beyond.
