Please be aware that Seattle Public Schools was on Lockdown today because of ICE!

This should NOT be tolerated! They are putting our children at risk and the fact that people think that this is okay is BEYOND DISGUSTING and COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE! This is outrageous behavior from grown a$$ adults who should be held accountable and responsible for putting hands on people! This includes American families who are getting killed, kidnapped, tortured, held against their will and then discarded like we’re piece of garbage.

This crap needs to STOP! We need to take our power back as PEOPLE! DO NOT LET THESE PEOPLE GET AWAY WITH THIS! There is something that needs to be done about this ASAP! We CAN NOT back down!

There are some trainings coming up this week and next week about Community defense and ICE watch on Jan 22 and Jan 28! Please sign up! This is so important for our families our children’s safety! Their lives should not be ruined by this! It should NOT matter what their circumstances are! These kids should NOT be treated and traumatized like this! People who are cowards and continue to invade our rights, our privacy and freedoms! It needs to END!

Please DO NOT take this lightly! It’s not just immigrants who whose lives are in jeopardy! It is American citizens who are also! We are ALL NOT SAFE!

WE MUST STAND UP AND FIGHT! DO NOT BACK DOWN! THEY NEED TO BE PUT IN THEIR PLACE!

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you were able to enjoy the holidays surrounded by family and friends.

I wanted to begin the year by reflecting on what I’ve accomplished and what I’m continuing to work toward. This isn’t about bragging — it’s a reminder to myself of the good I’ve been able to do while supporting others within a deeply flawed healthcare system.

I also want to honor the sacrifices it took to get here — from leaving my job of over two years at a primary care clinic, to beginning my training and starting my business, to serving my very first families as a new Doula (who welcomed me like one of their own). I even tried returning to a day job for a short time, but quickly realized my purpose was elsewhere. Choosing to do this work full time has meant navigating financial hardship at times, but I continued because I believe deeply in the support I provide.

Since then, I’ve continued my Doula work full time, applied for and was accepted into the AmeriCorps program, and completed countless trainings both virtually and in person — all while building connections and friendships along the way.

I am deeply grateful for this journey, every lesson, every challenge, and every family I’ve served. And I’m excited to see what comes next.

This week, the WA Department of Health released its new Maternal Mortality Review Panel Report, and it's a gut-wrenching look at how these highly avoidable deaths during the perinatal period are devastating our communities.

Some key findings:
🔴American Indian/Alaskan Native birthing people continue to experience the highest rate of maternal mortality: 7.3x the rate of pregnancy-related deaths of white people.
🔴Behavioral health-related deaths accounted for just under half (45%) of all pregnancy-related deaths, making it the single leading cause of death.
🔴Over 80% of the deaths were preventable.

The panel recommends:
🟢IMPROVE HEALTH CARE QUALITY AND ACCESS
Ensure Washingtonians have access to high-quality health care—including mental health care, substance use disorder treatment, and preventive care—throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum by strengthening and funding care coordination, improving communication and protocols, and ensuring providers have the skills, training, and professional support they need to provide high-quality care.

🟢STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY SUPPORT SERVICES
Invest in, develop, and expand comprehensive community support services that address essential needs during pregnancy and postpartum. These include strengthened home visiting programs, social work services, doula care, wraparound support for mental health and substance use disorder, and housing and food assistance.

🟢PROVIDE EQUITABLE, CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE CARE
Ensure care and services throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum are culturally responsive, free from bias, grounded in trauma-informed practices, and actively address racial injustice.

🩵Through our open and accessible direct service programs, culturally matched peer support, provider trainings, and coordination with community partners, we are addressing all of these areas to save lives every day.🩵

If you or someone you know is in need of mental health or emotional support during the perinatal period, please call or text the Warm Line at: 1-888-404-7763

🌿 10 Helpful & Easy Tips for Breastfeeding While Traveling ✈️🤍

Traveling with your little one? Breastfeeding on the go can feel intimidating, but with a few simple strategies, it can be smoother than you think. Here are 10 easy tips to support you on your journey:

Plan Feeding Breaks
Build extra time into your travel schedule for nursing sessions so you don’t feel rushed.

Wear Breastfeeding-Friendly Clothing
Tops with easy access, zippers, or two-piece outfits make feeding anywhere more comfortable.

Pack a Small Nursing Kit
Include burp cloths, nursing pads, a light cover (if you use one), ni**le balm, and a water bottle.

Know Your Rights
In many places, you are legally allowed to breastfeed anywhere you have the right to be. Confidence is your superpower.

Utilize Babywearing
Many parents find it easier to nurse discreetly and hands-free in a sling or wrap, especially during layovers or long lines.

Stay Hydrated
Travel can be dehydrating — keep water nearby so you continue producing milk comfortably.

Request Seating That Helps You Feed
On planes or buses, choosing an aisle or window seat can give you more comfort and privacy.

Bring a Manual Pump (Just in Case)
If baby sleeps through feeds or you need a quiet break, a manual pump can prevent engorgement when you can’t nurse.

Create a Calm Feeding Moment
A soft blanket, gentle shushing, or stepping away from the crowd can help baby latch more easily in new environments.

Give Yourself Grace
Babies may feed more often or be distracted in new places — it’s normal. Follow your baby’s cues and be kind to yourself.

🌼 Birth: Facts or Myths? Let’s Break It Down! 🌼

There’s so much information floating around about birth, and it can be hard to know what’s true. Here are some common myths vs. facts to help families feel informed and empowered:

❌ Myth: “You must give birth lying on your back.”

✅ Fact: You can birth in many positions—side-lying, hands & knees, squatting, or upright. Movement can help labor progress and may ease discomfort.

❌ Myth: “Getting an epidural means you failed.”

✅ Fact: There is no one right way to give birth. Pain relief is a tool, not a judgment. Your comfort and safety matter.

❌ Myth: “Your water breaking is always the first sign of labor.”

✅ Fact: Only about 10% of labors start that way. Most often, contractions begin first.

❌ Myth: “You can’t eat or drink during labor.”

✅ Fact: Many modern providers allow light eating and drinking, especially in early labor. Fueling your body can support stamina.

❌ Myth: “Induction always leads to a cesarean.”

✅ Fact: Many inductions result in safe, vaginal births—especially when the body is ready and support is aligned with evidence-based practices.

❌ Myth: “Birth is always traumatic.”

✅ Fact: Birth can be powerful, supported, gentle, and deeply positive—especially with preparation, autonomy, and compassionate care.

❄️❄️ Winter Postpartum Tips ❄️❄️

Nurturing yourself during the colder months is just as important as caring for your newborn. Here are gentle, doula-approved tips to help you feel supported all season long:

🌬️ 1. Keep Your Home Warm & Cozy
Postpartum bodies can be extra sensitive to temperature changes. Layer up, use warm blankets, and keep your resting spaces comfortable.

🫖 2. Nourish With Warm Foods & Drinks
Soups, stews, herbal teas, and warm meals support healing, digestion, and comfort. Hydration is just as important in winter—keep a warm drink nearby.

🕯️ 3. Create a Soft, Calm Environment
Dim lights, quiet music, and cozy textures can help your nervous system settle—especially during late-night feeds.

🧦 4. Protect Your Rest
Shorter daylight hours can impact sleep. Embrace naps, ask for support, and rest whenever possible.

🤧 5. Boost Immune Support
It’s cold + flu season. Encourage handwashing for visitors, keep baby-wearing close contacts limited, and listen to your body’s cues.

👶🏽 6. Skin-to-Skin Still Matters
Even in winter! Snuggle under a warm blanket with your baby to support bonding, regulation, and milk supply.

🧼 7. Humidity Helps
Indoor heat can dry out skin—use a humidifier to support you and baby’s comfort, especially during sleep.

💙 8. Seek Connection, Not Perfection
Winter can feel isolating. Reach out to your doula, friends, or a postpartum support group for emotional check-ins.

🌨️ 9. Gentle Movement When You're Ready
Short walks, stretching, and fresh air can help ease tension and boost mood—just bundle up!

✨ 10. Honor Your Healing Pace
This season is naturally slower. Give yourself permission to slow down too and receive as much support as you need.

✨ Holiday Mindfulness ✨

For many birthing people and families, the holiday season brings a mix of excitement, pressure, joy, and overwhelm. This year, give yourself permission to slow down, breathe, and honor your body + energy during this busy season.

🌿 Mindfulness Tips for the Season

1. Protect Your Peace
It’s okay to decline invitations, step away from stressful conversations, or create quiet time for yourself. Your emotional well-being matters.

2. Check In With Your Body
Pause and notice:

How am I breathing?

What does my body need right now?

Where can I soften?

3. Stay Nourished
Enjoy seasonal foods, drink water, and rest when you can. A well-fed and hydrated body feels safer and more grounded.

4. Set Gentle Boundaries — Especially With a Newborn
The holidays can bring pressure from family to visit, hold the baby, or be involved in ways that may not feel supportive.
Remember:

You are the parents. You set the pace.

It’s okay to limit visitors, ask for masks/hand washing, or say “not right now.”

Protecting your newborn’s space and your postpartum healing is not rude — it’s essential.

5. Create Mini Moments of Calm
Light a candle, journal for 5 minutes, take a warm shower, or practice a grounding breath. Small rituals make a big difference.

6. Embrace Slowness
Not everything needs to be rushed or perfect. It’s okay to move at a pace that feels good to you, even if it doesn’t match the holiday buzz around you.

🎁 Your presence is the true gift.
This holiday season, honor your needs, listen to your body, and stay rooted in what truly matters. You and your baby deserve a peaceful, protected, and mindful transition into this new chapter.

💌 Doula PSA: Stay Aware of Scam Emails & Inquiries

As birthworkers, many of us receive inquiries from families every week — and unfortunately, scammers have started targeting doulas and birth professionals too. Here are a few gentle reminders to help keep you safe:

🔎 Trust your instincts
If something feels “off,” rushed, or too good to be true, pause before responding.

📧 Check the email details
• Look out for odd phrasing, spelling errors, or unusual urgency
• Verify the sender’s email address
• Be wary of anyone asking for your personal info or banking details up front

💸 Avoid payment red flags
Scammers often offer overpayment, ask to pay with a “manager” or “assistant,” or try to get money sent back to them. Legitimate clients don’t do this.

🌐 Search the name or situation
A quick search can help you see if others have reported similar messages.

👩‍🍼 You deserve safe, genuine connections
Protect your energy and your practice — real clients will respect your boundaries and communicate clearly.

If you ever feel unsure about an inquiry, trust that hesitation and take a minute to double-check. Your safety matters just as much as the care you provide to your clients. 💛

❄️ Winter Postpartum Wellness

Nourish your body. Protect your peace. Embrace the season.

Winter brings a different kind of postpartum journey—quieter, slower, and more tender. As the days get colder and darker, new parents often need extra warmth, grounding, and care. Here are gentle reminders to support your healing this season:

🌬️ 1. Keep Warm & Rested
Your body is still healing. Cozy layers, warm blankets, and staying indoors when you need to can make a world of difference in your comfort and recovery.

🍲 2. Nourish With Warm Foods
Soups, stews, herbal teas, oatmeal, ginger, turmeric, bone broth—your body thrives on warmth right now. These foods support digestion, milk production, and overall healing.

💛 3. Prioritize Mental Wellness
Shorter days can impact mood. Make space for sunlight, grounding routines, and support—from your partner, doula, or friends. It’s okay to ask for help and even more okay to receive it.

🤱 4. Protect Your Energy
Limit unnecessary outings and obligations. Winter invites a slower pace. Let this season give you permission to do less and rest more.

👶 5. Skin-to-Skin Isn’t Just for Newborns
Skin-to-skin during winter keeps baby warm, regulates their body systems, and strengthens bonding—plus it's incredibly calming for you both.

🛁 6. Create a Cozy Healing Space
Think warm baths, soft lighting, comfy robes, and quiet moments. Little comforts add up to big healing.

🧣 7. Honor Your Emotions
Postpartum feelings can feel heavier in winter. You’re not alone. Reach out if you're feeling low, anxious, or overwhelmed. Support matters—especially now.

💬 8. Stay Connected
Even if you can’t physically gather, virtual check-ins and heartfelt conversations can help ease the isolation winter sometimes brings.
