Early transfer of complex wound patients to settings with high-quality wound care can help reduce length of stay, readmissions, and care costs. Kindred Hospitals, which provides specialized acute care for medically complex patients, offers an advanced wound care program built on patient-centeredness, formal wound care training, team-based treatment, and standard protocols. These characteristics make Kindred a high-quality care setting for complex wound patients.

As patients age and develop an increasing number of comorbidities, including diabetes and obesity, they are more prone to developing wounds and to experiencing longer, more complex recoveries.[1] Chronic wound patients also often experience psychological side effects such as loneliness and depressio...

A Message from Martha: I came to Kindred Hospital Seattle – First Hill in December after four months of care in a variety of facilities, including a skilled nursing facility, I was incredibly ill with a complex case and needed acute care to rehabilitate and recover. I had a feeding tube, and a pressure wound and was malnourished with almost no executive function as my liver was compromised and my blood was full of toxins.

The team at Kindred Hospital was incredibly compassionate and dedicated to getting me well and whole again. Moreover, their collaboration with caregivers outside of Kindred was excellent, with the common goal of getting me strong enough to return home and continue to heal while I wait for a liver transplant. They have worked closely with the Swedish Organ and Transplant Center, my doctors there, my primary care provider and my therapists (physical and occupational).

I was discharged on February 13 and have been making continued progress and recovery at home. I realize now how close I came to dying and that the efforts of the care team at Kindred Hospital brought me back to healing. I cannot say enough about their impact, their kindness, and their care with patients and the staff.

Thank you, Kindred, for saving my life and getting me back on the road to recovery and independence!

Thyrza is a young, vibrant woman who has had many medical complications due to her rare, chronic condition that causes inflammation throughout the body. Thyrza came to Kindred Hospital Seattle - First Hill from the Cleveland Clinic after her abdominal procedure was complicated by acute respiratory failure requiring a tracheostomy (trach) placement, left thoracotomy, and lung decortication.

Her stay at Kindred was full of ups and downs including several intensive care unit (ICU) stays for severe sepsis with multiorgan failure requiring pressor support. Careful selection of antibiotics by our infectious disease specialist was required to clear Thyrza from her infection.

Thyrza was frustrated by her many attempts to wean from the ventilator that were unsuccessful due to persistent worsening hypercapnia. At one point, the medical team was concerned Thyrza may not become independent from the ventilator yet continued with weaning trials and ventilator adjustments to meet her goal of returning home.

The diligence of the medical team paid off and Thyrza’s lungs began to improve. She was successfully weaned from the ventilator and her trach was removed after 145 days at Kindred.
