In Ayurveda, spring is Kapha season, meaning there’s an increase in the earth and water elements, which can lead to heaviness, stagnation, and congestion if not balanced properly. As the weather warms, it’s an ideal time to detox, lighten up, and invigorate the body and mind. Here are some key Ayurvedic protocols for transitioning into spring:
1. Adjust Your Diet: Favor Light, Warm, & Dry Foods
Since Kapha is heavy, moist, and cool, balance it with:
✔ Warm, light, and dry foods like steamed greens, quinoa, and lentils
✔ Pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes (spices, leafy greens, turmeric, ginger, radish)
✔ Reduce dairy, heavy oils, and cold, damp foods (avoid excess wheat, fried foods, ice-cold drinks, and sugary treats)
2. Cleanse & Detoxify
Spring is the best time for Ayurvedic cleansing to clear out winter sluggishness:
✔ Start the day with warm lemon water to flush toxins
✔ Drink CCF tea (cumin, coriander, fennel) to aid digestion
✔ Try a gentle kitchari cleanse for a few days to reset digestion (Kitchari recipe to be posted this week!)
✔ Dry brushing (Garshana) to stimulate circulation and lymphatic flow
3. Move & Sweat Daily
To counteract Kapha’s heaviness, keep moving:
✔ Morning movement is best—try dynamic yoga, brisk walking, or cardio workouts
✔ Sun salutations, backbends, and invigorating breathwork (Bhastrika or Kapalabhati) help clear congestion
✔ Get outside! Sunlight naturally balances Kapha
4. Shift Your Daily Routine (Dinacharya)
✔ Wake up early (before 6 AM) to avoid Kapha sluggishness
✔ Abhyanga (self-massage) with warming oils like mustard or dry brushing instead
✔ Lighten up mentally—avoid over-sleeping, excess screen time, and emotional heaviness
5. Herbal Support
✔ Trikatu (ginger, black pepper, long pepper) to ignite digestion
✔ Turmeric & honey to combat congestion
✔ Chyawanprash for immunity and energy
6. Align with the Season
Spring is about renewal and lightness—let go of the past, clear out clutter, and set fresh intentions. Just as the earth awakens, this is your time to detox, energize, and bloom.
