A child diagnosed with cancer in sub-Saharan Africa is more than five times as likely to die from their malignancy as a child in North America. While delayed diagnosis and limited access to treatment drive these disparities, Nigeria faces an additional challenge: no published data exist on the cost or cost-effectiveness of childhood cancer services nationwide.

BVGH coordinated and connected P*s from MedServe-LUTH Cancer Center (Medserve Oncology), The Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba and seven other Nigerian teaching hospitals; economics experts at the The Hospital for Sick Children - SickKids in Toronto; and funding from My Child Matters to obtain data needed to inform policymakers’ budgeting decisions. Together, BVGH and our partners are collecting data to assess pediatric cancer cost-effectiveness, model treatment abandonment, and produce actionable evidence to guide policy and priorities in Nigeria.

Special thanks to Dr. Adeseye Akinsete and Dr. Adedayo Joseph, principal investigators at MedServe-LUTH Cancer Center (MLCC) and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), for their work on the study.

Child life services are critical to improving the experience of pediatric patients and families during their time in the hospital. As part of a multi-component program to reduce pediatric treatment abandonment at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada (UATH), BVGH coordinated a hybrid (in-person/virtual) child life practice training program led by Mrs. Elizabeth Kabuthi (Certified Child Life Specialist, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Eldoret, Kenya). Over 20 pediatricians, nurses, mental health providers, and social workers from UATH gained practical strategies to recognize distress, use play to ease children’s fears, and deliver more holistic, family-centered care.
