Hearing “you matter” is powerful. Believing it deep down is something else entirely.

“People say a lot that ‘you are important, or you matter.’ And hearing those words is important. But actually experiencing that feeling, and knowing it in your heart, is something different.”

This Women's History Month, we're celebrating a leader who has spent more than 20 years showing up for children and families across greater Seattle.

Sara Biancofiori, our Vice President of Youth Development, believes that strength and care aren't opposites. They're the whole job.

From a summer camp in the San Juan Islands to leading one of our largest departments, Sara's story is one of belonging, purpose, and what it really means to say yes to people when it matters most.

Read her full story at the link below, and share this post to celebrate the women in your life who lead with both strength and heart.

It’s Cause Week at the Y!

From March 2-7 the Y will be filled with special activities, friendly competitions, and opportunities to give back, all in support of the programs and services that make a difference in our community.

As we celebrate 150 years of the YMCA of Greater Seattle, Cause Week is a chance to experience the Y at its best while helping strengthen access, opportunity, and a sense of belonging for all.

Whether you stop by for an activity, take part in a giveaway, or make a gift toward our fundraising goal, every action helps move our Annual Fund Drive forward.

Our communities run on child care, and child care needs our voices right now.

Washington lawmakers are considering massive cuts: $625 million in the Senate proposal and $425 million in the House. They’re also weighing funding changes that ignore how child care actually works. Classrooms can’t operate “only when someone shows up.” Providers have to staff consistently to keep kids safe, support learning, and be there for working families, day in and day out.

If these cuts and changes move forward, every community could feel it: fewer child care spots, higher costs, and classrooms forced to close. Places like the Y may have to reduce capacity when families need us most.

Take action now: Use the link to send a letter to your legislators to protect Working Connections Child Care and keep child care stable. Sign it, send it, then share this post so others do too.

Today is We Wear Black Day. 🖤

We Wear Black began in 2020 as a way for Ys to come together in a visible show of solidarity and a shared commitment to equity and inclusion.
There is still work to do to build communities where everyone feels safe, valued, and able to thrive, but this is work we move forward on together, with care, courage, and consistency.

Join us today: wear black and share what belonging looks like in your community.

For 150 years, the YMCA has been part of Washington’s story, strengthening communities, empowering youth, and creating spaces where everyone can belong.

On Friday, 2/6/2026, the Washington State Legislature passed SR 8682 recognizing the YMCA and the impact the Y has made across our state and nation.

A little history we’re proud of: the YMCA of Greater Seattle (including our Downtown branch) was founded in 1876, even before the City of Seattle was officially incorporated. For a century and a half, we’ve shown up alongside our neighbors to celebrate community, uplift families, advance equity and justice, and support whole-person health.

That work continues every day through collaboration, belonging, achievement, and social connection.

We’re deeply grateful to the Washington State Legislature for honoring this milestone and for supporting the Y as we kick off our 150th year celebration.

And thank you to Senators Pedersen, Alvarado, Wilson, Trudeau, and Riccelli for sharing your Y stories. Your reflections are a powerful reminder that the Y is more than a building, it’s a community that shapes lives.

Here’s to 150 years, and to the next 150, building a stronger, more connected, more equitable Washington together.
