October is Eczema Awareness Month!

What is Atopic Dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, inherited skin condition. It typically begins in early childhood (between 2 months and 5 years), though it can appear later. In infants, it frequently affects the face and extensor surfaces, while in young children, it is most prominent on the hands, wrists, and the folds of the arms and legs.

Will Children Outgrow Atopic Dermatitis?

It is impossible to predict how long atopic dermatitis will last. While it often subsides around puberty, it can persist throughout life for some individuals. Even those who appear to “outgrow” their childhood eczema may always have skin that is particularly sensitive to irritants, weather, and humidity extremes. For adults who experienced childhood eczema, the hands are the most common site of continued problems, especially if frequently exposed to water or irritants that damage the skin barrier. For some, the condition may even worsen with age due to environmental factors, skincare habits, medical conditions, or certain medications.

What is the first step when I visit Spectrum Dermatology for concerns about hair loss?

We recommend beginning the hair restoration journey by visiting our team of medical dermatology providers. It is crucial to conduct a thorough root cause analysis (no pun intended) of the hair loss. There are many different causes of hair loss. Therefore, identifying the specific reason for hair loss will enable the provider to treat the underlying cause and select an appropriate type of hair restoration protocol.

What can I expect during my initial consultation for hair loss at Spectrum Dermatology?

During your initial visit with your medical provider, we will obtain a detailed personal and family medical history, review your medications, and discuss any allergies you may have. We will review the social history, as well as other potential stressors that may contribute to hair loss or receding hairline. We may obtain photographic images of the hair loss pattern for our records. Frequently, we order a hair loss blood panel to investigate intrinsic causes of hair loss. We may initiate hair loss treatment, which varies based on individual cases, ranging from over-the-counter therapies (such as vitamin supplements and hair restoration serums) to prescription-strength options (topical serums or pills).

Hair loss is a very common problem, and for many people it can be a very frustrating and emotional one. There are many reasons hair can thin. The good news is that catching it early can make a significant difference in how it’s treated.

How Do You Know If You’re Losing Hair?

Sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes it’s sneaky. Here are some signs to look out for:

More Hair Than Usual: Are you seeing a lot more hair in your shower drain, on your pillow, or in your brush?

Thinning Up Top: Does your scalp seem more visible, especially on the top of your head?

That Pesky Hairline: For guys, especially, is your hairline starting to creep backward?

Pony’s Looking Skinnier: If you pull your hair back, does your ponytail feel a lot less full than it used to?

Your Part Is Wider: Does the part in your hair seem to be getting broader?

Sudden Bald Spots: Are you noticing totally smooth patches where hair used to be? These can pop up overnight.

All Over Hair Loss: In some cases, hair can thin out or even fall out everywhere.

Other Scalp Issues: Sometimes, hair loss is accompanied by an itchy, burning, red, or flaky scalp. It can even affect other areas, such as your eyebrows or eyelashes.

The Bottom Line: If you’re noticing any of these signs and they’re concerning you, consulting a dermatologist is a great first step. They can help figure out what’s going on and what your options are.
