Meet my newest client - Verne the turkey chick; tiny to work on, but a sweetie! In reality, he was just a lovely guest, but he brought a welcome energy and a lesson about the beauty of the nervous system and the benefits of co-regulation.

As his "mom" and I worked together and our systems attuned, he relaxed and snoozed comfortably, heartbeat slowed. When we felt more emotion and activation, he definitely made it known that he felt it - with peeps and wing-flapping.

We can all access and assist our own nervous systems, with a little knowledge and practice, and improve our daily lives. In a pinch, we can borrow a loved one's calm and cheerful system, to help ourselves move into better regulation. The body is amazing!

Just being with Verne, watching his little system respond and adjust naturally, watching him relax as I stroked his head - feeling myself relax accordingly - was an education and an honor.

Whew! Such a relief that in these dark, disappointing, and debilitating days that rebirth and revival could be making an appearance. Somehow, nature always pushes through, rebelling against the dark and cold to revel in the light. This gives me such hope and I'm sending that hope as well as some love out to you. We all need some light and life and, especially, connection right now...make sure you are spending time with others; revel in these lengthening days!

If you've been feeling at the effect of everything happening in the world - including Winter! - join us for - Feeling Others While Feeling Yourself: A Somatic Practice Workshop. My amazing colleague Victoria Vinson-Jones and I have put our heads (and bodies) together to find a way to nurture and support healers, activists, parents, caregivers, and everyone with a body who could use some joy right now!

We plan to explore and embody rebelling and revelling alike, tune our nervous systems, and practice living in our beautiful bodies in order to give us the strongest foundation from which to go forward and do what we need to do.

I love a sunset! Seriously, if you look through my phone gallery a good half of the pics are sunsets, taken various places. I know some of the reasons why - being outside and in nature, the colors, and the spectacle, and the way the trees or hills become dark shapes against the glow. I also know that my heart slows down as I'm drinking in the beauty. I feel my nervous system resting. I hear myself taking big breaths, and sighing out in contentment. I'm doing it right now, just thinking about it and looking at these (unfiltered) pictures taken on a recent trip to Arizona.

If you are feeling stressed, or your vague nerve is activated, or in fight/flight, one of the best things you can do for yourself is take it outside. Being outside and in nature has proven, restorative effects on your nervous system: calming, regulation, increasing breath and oxygenation, and moving from the activated ventral state to a more rest and reflect state. Even just looking at a PICTURE of nature can have the same soothing qualities. So go to a park, look around at nature, feel the trees, listen to water, feel dirt or sand under your feet, watch a sunset.

I know how hard it can be to admit you need some sort of help but there's no shame in getting a little assistance to do the things you love or need to do. I love to garden but there's no way I'm getting down on the ground or digging big holes so I had to pivot...meet my new garden cart/seat!

Whether you have to sit down while chopping vegetables, get help to do laundry, make the bed, or go grocery shopping, tote things around the house in a wagon, or use a cart outside, it doesn't have to define you or ruin an experience. I understand the challenge of losing these tiny battles of ability and movement and activity; they can wear on you and make you feel defeated. Life is hard..but you can do hard things.

I really wish I could do things the way everyone else does but getting help or figuring out a workaround is better than feeling depressed or frustrated. And frankly, I'd rather be outside getting dirt on my hands!
