If your nervous system is stuck in threat or striving mode, it will continue to drain metabolic resources and create metabolic stress. How does the body cope with this? By increasing appetite, elevating cravings, impacting energy, mood, sleep and the rest. Hormone deregulation ensues. Immune function becomes compromised. Health degrades.

While the health & fitness industry pushes the pills of diet and exercise, the nervous system continues to stay stuck.

To get better requires retraining the nervous system. While diet, exercise and supplements (adaptogens, nutrients, etc) play a role, they are inadequate to address this dysfunction in many. They also can, by themselves reinforce the striving system inadvertently adding to the issue.

To reprogram this system requires rest & relaxation. It also requires a reprogramming of the unconscious stories of safety & safeness from old adverse events in life. Finally, it requires a new mindset and retooled identity around nervous system switching versus just more diet and exercise.

After all, how well has all this stress and obsession over diet, exercise and supplements been working for you?

Burnout recovery is my primary clinical focus.

The following perfectly describes the route to recovery.

Excellent walkthrough!

Menopause in medicine, diagnostically, is seen as a moment in time (1 year since last period). Confirmed with an FSH consistently above 30.

But this misses the hormonal reality. IMO physicians should be seeing menopause as 3 different hormonal states. 1) Perimenopause with progesterone low while estrogen fluctuates from high to low. 2) Menopause where estrogen & progesterone are both low. 3) post-menopause where some women (certainly not all or most) can see lowered E, P and testosterone but with a relatively more dominant testosterone state.

Why is this important? It guides a more personalized approach.

Think of Joan Of Arc. She has armor. That’s estrogen, the most powerful female hormone helping women be more insulin sensitive, less cortisol reactive & more neurologically resilient. She has her shield, progesterone. Protective against cortisol and stress but without the insulin sensitizing effect of estrogen. And her sword (testosterone) which acts as another stress protector.

At perimenopause a women loses her shield making her more stress sensitive. At menopause the armor is lost. This amplifies the stress susceptibility and adds insulin resistance. And during this process her sword keeps getting broken to shorter and shorter length.

With this understanding lifestyle approaches become clear.
1) perimenopause focus on stress reduction. Extremes of diet & exercise may not be wise. Instead an extra hour in bed or doing something relaxing is likely better than an extra hour on the treadmill.
2) menopause. Even more stress reducing activity. And cutting carbs as the major calorie reducing strategy.
3) postmenopause? Weight training. it’s historically viewed as a young male endeavor. But those who benefit the most are mature females IMO.

Stress reduction, carb lowering, weight lifting centered activity. These may be THE most important lifestyle adjustments here.

As a man I have always been a bit confused why life made this an area of expertise. I find it as comical as perhaps you do. I do believe this area is better addressed by female experts so here are some of my favs .mindypelz .carriejones

PSA: the infectious Shigella related diarrhea warning you may have heard a little bit about over the last week or so is a very real thing.

I've already seen a few cases in my very small private practice.
No fun, people. Super brutal.

Here's a resource for prevention: https://www.cdc.gov/shigella/shigella-toolkit.html

Be safe! Be well.

The information in this toolkit is intended to help state and local health departments respond to suspected or confirmed cases, clusters, or outbreaks of Shigella infection.
