When looking for fidget items, it can be challenging to find one that meets a sensory need without it being distracting from the task it’s supposed to be supporting focus for. Figuring out which fidget is the right one can take time and practice. At first they might feel novel and exciting, so practicing with them at home and in the community before sending it to school can help increase effective use with them. When used correctly, fidget items can help support focus, self-regulation, and meet a sensory need of tactile and proprioceptive input, so a child can feel better able to engage in the tasks they need to do. Here are a few suggestions that clients have benefitted from using:

Today is national handwriting day! Handwriting is often a goal area in occupational therapy. It involves several skills such as fine motor strength and coordination, hand dexterity, motor planning, visual-motor skills, visual perceptual skills, and executive functioning. When handwriting is hard, working with an occupational therapist can help uncover the barriers and turn working on handwriting into fun, engaging, and regulating activities that build confidence and task persistence along the way.
