Herbs like to play with their friends!
Whenever we use an herb, we always make sure to pair it with complementary herbs- for example, a hot and dry herb might be paired with a moistening herb to restrain its action.
These combinations of herbs are informed by the interplay of yin and yang- always moving in relation to each other within the body and influenced by the yin and yang nature of what we take in.
Three herbs are often used in Chinese herbal formulas:
Ginger 🫚
Licorice
Jujube date ☕️
Ginger is warming and soothes digestion, helping us digest and assimilate the herbs in a formula.
Licorice is sweet and moderates the effects of other herbs, taking the edge of substances that otherwise might be too fast moving or depleting.
Jujube dates add a food based source of nutrition to an herbal formula, helping the body to replenish nutrients that will complement the activity of the other herbs.
It also helps that ginger, licorice, and jujube dates are all pretty tasty. Some other Chinese herbs can have a strong flavor (IYKYK 😝)!
