Principle 4: Openly examine and confess my faults to myself, to God, and to someone I trust.
“Happy are the pure in heart.” Matthew 5:8a
This was a hard principle for me. This meant I had to reveal to others that I wasn’t perfect. That the person that shook their hand and smiled to greet them had a dark and ugly side, but this is probably one of the more important principles to experience healing.
“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”
James 5:16 ESV
The opposite of addiction is not sobriety, but connection. We find healing through Communion with God and others.
I hope your year is going well for you. I am thankful for our group and its faithfulness. If I’m being honest, this year has been increasingly difficult for me so far. I’ve had to deal with difficult decisions in my home and at work. And quite frankly, I’m tired. I’m worn out. So, I’m here to share some encouragement for others in that same season: don’t give up!
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
Galatians 6:9 ESV
I wanted to encourage you, because I found a verse that painted the most beautiful picture of hardship for me:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 ESV
The question was asked: Why does God comfort us?
Without reading further, I’d have said because He loves us and cares for us. While that may be true, it goes deeper than that. God comforts us, so that we can comfort others with His comfort. Wow!
So when I go through a trial, experience a loss, or in any affliction, Christ comforts me, so I can extend that comfort to others.
In Celebrate Recovery we say, “God doesn’t waste a hurt.” And He doesn’t. You may be the person who connects with someone going through what you are going through right now. This may be a way for you to share the gospel -don’t give up.
If you need help. If you are feeling tired carrying your burden on your own…reach out to someone. If you feel you have no-one, we meet on Mondays at 6PM at Cornerstone Baptist Church. Would love to see you there!
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28 ESV
