Pettis County Joint Communications Implements AED Integration with 911 Call Handling System
Pettis County Joint Communications (PCJC) is pleased to announce the implementation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) interface and integration within the center’s emergency call-handling protocol system. This enhancement allows 911 telecommunicators to more effectively identify and direct callers to nearby AEDs during suspected cardiac arrest emergencies.
This advancement strengthens the community’s Chain of Survival by enabling dispatchers to quickly reference registered AED locations and guide callers to retrieve them when appropriate while emergency responders are en route.
Why AED Location Awareness Matters
Sudden cardiac arrest remains a leading public health emergency. According to national data, more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the United States, and survival depends heavily on immediate action from bystanders before emergency responders arrive.
• Immediate CPR and use of an AED can double or triple the chance of survival.
• However, bystanders use an AED in only about 7–9% of public cardiac arrest incidents.
• Research shows that only about 20% of people know the location of an AED near their home, even though many are willing to use one if available.
These statistics highlight a critical challenge: AEDs may be nearby, but they are often not known or easily located during an emergency.
Community Participation Needed
To ensure the success of this initiative, Pettis County Joint Communications is asking businesses, organizations, schools, churches, and community members to help expand the local AED registry.
If you own, manage, or have access to an AED, please contact the Pettis County Joint Communications administrative office to register the device. Registering AEDs allows 911 Telecommunicators to identify and direct callers to the nearest available device during a cardiac emergency, when appropriate.
A Community Effort to Save Lives
Every minute without defibrillation significantly reduces the chance of survival during sudden cardiac arrest. By ensuring AED locations are known and accessible, Pettis County can improve emergency response outcomes and potentially save lives.
Pettis County Joint Communications appreciates the community’s continued partnership in building a safer and more prepared county.
PCJC would like to extend sincere appreciation to the Pettis County Ambulance District and the Pettis County Call to Care Program for their partnership and support in implementing this life-saving capability.
