What is a Doula?” That was my reaction the first time someone asked me if I was a doula. I had just supported a second friend through her childbirth when I started looking into what it meant to be a doula. I realized it was something I enjoyed and had the supportive and nurturing personality needed to fulfill that role. When the time was right I completed my certification though New Beginnings Do

ula Training. I believe every birth family can benefit from having doula support - whether it is your first or tenth baby! Having continuous labor support that is individualized to meet your unique needs and birth wishes, while also adjusting to your changing needs, helps you experience a positive birth, whether at home or hospital, unmedicated or epidural, VBAC or cesarean. As a doula I provide physical support that helps you maintain a sense of confidence while progressing your labor. I provide emotional support that helps you feel cared for while assuring your partner that your labor is normal. Before, during, and after childbirth I provide you with access to evidence-based information and help you find your voice to take an active role in your care and support the decisions you make. I specialize not only in childbirth support, but in helping families after baby is born. As a postpartum doula I help ease the burdens of daily life so you can enjoy and bond with your baby. From prenatal support, birth community referrals, support to help you rest and heal, to newborn care, breastfeeding, tools to encourage sibling bonding, helping you look after older children as you adjust to your new "normal", light housework, laundry and meal-prep, even overnight stays. Whatever your unique needs are, I am ready to help. I look forward to meeting you and supporting your childbirth and / or postpartum!

At the end of your pregnancy, start stop contractions, scheduled induction, or have a gut feeling baby is coming do these moves.

Might seem funny but crawling is a great way to prepare for birth. I love recommending this to my moms with little kids.

Two things you’ll hear me say a lot: the only predictable thing about birth is that it’s unpredictable, and birth prep is about taking control of the controllables.

There is a lot about this process that feels out of our control. That can feel scary, I know. I don’t know about you, but I like to feel like I’m in control. Maybe that’s why my babies LOVE to make me wait and why I have never had a baby prior to my guess date, HA! Like “okay okay, yes, I need to learn some patience, I get it.”

And I can’t help but think that this is kind of part of the point.
Part of the journey. The portal. The becoming.

You aren’t just growing and birthing a baby, you’re growing and birthing yourself as a mother/parent/human being on this planet.

Life (and birth) isn’t about forcing and muscling your way through. It’s about flowing by aligning thoughts, feelings and actions.

This means it is not about just “believing in yourself” enough. There IS an active component to this process. Just like life... how you show up for this journey deeply impacts the journey itself.

It is also not about forcing outcomes or frantically and obsessively preparing for birth. If you are obsessively doing every single birth prep tip you’ve seen on the internet, you also might be forcing, not flowing. We can take action and take control of the controllables in a more balanced, calm, and aligned way.

Life, and birth, is better when we flow, rather than force. When we are proactive more than we are reactive.

Prepare your body, mind, spirit.

Find the best team to support you.

Stack the cards in your favor.

And then let go.... breathe, flow, open. Surrender to what is. And know that you are so freaking amazing, not matter what.

"How is labor pain different from other types of pain?
Labor pain differs from other kinds of pain in ways that make coping easier. Labor pain:

Is not a symptom of injury or illness: When pain signals that something is wrong, anxiety can increase pain. But labor pain is simply a sign that your body is working hard and well.
Only lasts a certain amount of time: Labor rarely takes more than 24 hours.
Is predictable: Contractions usually last only a minute and come in a regular pattern, with a few (usually) pain-free minutes in between them. This means you can predict and prepare for each contraction and rest between them.
Intensifies gradually over time: Contractions almost always start off mild and gradually grow longer, stronger and closer together. This gives you time to adapt."

Our Story

“A Doula? What is a Doula?” That was my reaction to the first time someone asked me if I was a doula. I had just supported a second friend through her childbirth when I started looking into what it meant to be a doula. I realized it was something I enjoyed and had a naturally supportive and nurturing personality that was needed to fulfill that role. I began to read everything I could about being a doula. Part of my interest in becoming a doula also goes back to the birth of my firstborn. At that time my husband was not comfortable in medical situations(which mine was), so a dear friend stepped in to encourage me during my labor and delivery. Although not certified at this time I do keep up to date with the required reading list and information from the doula program I plan to complete in a few years. (when the timing is right for my family)

I believe every birth mother and couple can benefit from having a doulas support. There are so many decisions to be made before your baby arrives: the birth location, who your care provider will be, what your philosophy and feelings about birth, that you do have options and can plan an active role in your birth and care. Most parents have many concerns and questions and feel more confident and relaxed if they can gain information about the process beforehand. As your doula, I can take the time to answer your individual questions during the prenatal time and help you decide what questions you want to ask your care provider and the policies of your birth location. I am a familiar face during labor and birth that stays by your side from beginning to end. I provide parents with lots of encouragement about what is normal at a time of uncertainty. The births I have attended have taught me so much, and it is always an honor to be present at the birth of a child. I love working with families and the feeling that I can help make their birth experiences beautiful. I have experience with natural births at both hospital and homebirths, epidurals, inductions, VBACs, and cesarean births.

While many doulas work as just a birth doula or postpartum doula, I do both. Your need for support does not stop at birth. Every mothers/couples situation and needs are different. From first time parents, overnight stays, meal prep, dad having to go back to work, or older children to care for I am available to step in where you need me. I look forward to meeting you and whether you choose me as you doula or not, wish you all the best during this amazing moment in your life. Katie
