Fascia is a powerful three-dimensional web that covers and connects every system of our body.

There is a microfascial system within every cell. Trauma, surgery and thwarted inflammatory responses can produce fascial restrictions that can exert crushing pressure of up to approximately 2,000 pounds of pressure per square inch on the various pain-sensitive structures in the body.

It is important to understand that fascial restrictions do not show up in any of the standard testing now being done, including X-rays, CT scans, myelograms or blood work. Therefore, fascial restrictions have long been missed or misdiagnosed.

New technology based on probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy shows the three-dimensional fibrous web and the fluid within the fascial system, also referred to as the fascia’s ground substance. The recognition of the fluid aspect of the fascial system is a major shift in the understanding of cellular function.

The work of Gerald H. Pollack, PhD, at the University of Washington, provides an understanding of the physics of how the fluid moves through the fascial system. We’ve all been brought up to believe there are three phases of water: ice, water and v***r. It turns out, discovered through the work of Po***ck, that there is a fourth phase, liquid crystal.

Liquid crystal has the characteristics of both solid and fluid and is capable of change. Another word for liquid crystal is fascia.

Further, a book called The Extracellular Matrix and Ground Regulation: Basis for a Holistic Biological Medicine (North Atlantic Books, 2017), by one of Austria’s leading scientists, Alfred Pischinger, MD, (1899–1982), represents over 30 years of research on the fascial system.

Pischinger found there is no nerve or blood vessel that touches any of the trillions of cells in our body. The fascial matrix and the space in the matrix—which is not actually space but a fluid/viscous substance called the ground substance—is the environment of every cell.

The fascial system is the main transport system of our body. This means the nutrition we ingest, the fluid we drink, the air we breathe, all the biochemistry, hormones and information/energy that every one of the trillions of our cells needs to thrive, must go through the fluidity of the fascial system.

Then, as the cell attempts to excrete waste products, the ground substance of the fascia must be fluid for it to reach the lymphatic system. The solidification of the fluid nature of the ground substance can create physiological chaos.

The problem is, up until recently all research had been done on cadavers. As you know, dead people are brittle.

Unfortunately, science ignored the importance of the fascia’s fluid ground substance. This explains why too many forms of massage, bodywork and energy work produce only temporary results.

However, the principles of myofascial release will help eradicate the symptoms of pain, restriction of movement, fibromyalgia, headaches and a multitude of women’s health issues.

An MFR Technique for Back Pain
Since back pain is one of the bigger factors in our society, I would like to teach you a myofascial release technique that you can utilize for a majority of your clients. I call it a cross-hand lumbosacral decompression.

Have your client lie prone with a pillow under their chest for comfort.

There should be no lotion whatsoever used on the skin, because when the client has lotion on their skin you cannot do myofascial release; in fact, you will exhaust yourself as a therapist and not get the profound results that are possible for your clients.

Place one hand lightly on your client’s sacrum, fingers pointing toward their feet. Cross your hands and place the other hand very lightly over their high lumbar, low thoracic area. Always move very slowly with myofascial release, never abruptly.

With myofascial release you don’t grip; your hands should be soft and contoured to the shape of the client’s body. This gives you great sensitivity and strength. Then, very slowly, allow your hands to drop toward the table until you feel mild resistance. Keep your pressure light. Go down to resistance and just nudge into it like you are making handprints in soft clay.

Then slowly, without sliding, open your hands in opposite directions. Not sliding enables you to use the fascial system as a powerful lever that reaches deeply into the body where the real problems lie.

As you open your hands, the first give you feel will be the elastic-muscular component, which represents about 20 percent of the fascial system. This is what practitioners of other forms of massage, bodywork and energy work think a release is, but it’s not; it’s only a partial release, producing only temporary results.

The key is, you will eventually hit a point where it feels like as you open your hands you hit a brick wall or come to a dead halt. This is the collagenous barrier, which most practitioners ignore and don’t spend enough time with, is the other 80 percent of the fascial system.

At this point, just nudge into the barrier with gentle-but-firm pressure. Take a step or so back to use your body as leverage, because this is not about brute force. Then wait, patiently, for at least five minutes. When the release does occur, it feels like butter melting or taffy stretching; in other words, there is a sense of softening.

At that point, take the slack out some more without sliding on the surface until you hit the next barrier. Most people have a multitude of barriers, because fascial restrictions have been ignored for so long. Patience is very, very important.

Healing Phenomena
Somewhere around the five-minute period, a series of phenomena occur that are essential for authentic healing and lasting results.

First, the client’s body begins to produce piezoelectricity. The cells of our body have a crystalline nature, and when you put pressure into a crystal it generates an electrical flow. So in our body what occurs is a bio-electric flow.

This is usually coupled with a phenomena called mechanotransduction. Our mechanical pressure, around the five-minute mark, begins to produce a biochemical, hormonal effect at the cellular level.

It has now recently been discovered, also through mechanotransduction, that the mindbody begins to produce interleukin-8, which is the body’s natural anti-inflammatory. Also, interleukin-3 and interleukin-1b are produced, which have to do with increasing circulation and boosting our immune system.

Next, we move into phase transition, which is the phenomenon where ice transforms into water. Obviously, in our body it’s not ice; it’s the solidification of the fluid component of the fascial system. It’s ground substance, which creates that before-mentioned crushing pressure on pain-sensitive structures. There is a chaotic period during the phase transition, and it is in the chaotic period where change, growth and healing can occur.

Ultimately, we move into what is called resonance, which is another word for release.

These phenomena allow the tissue, which has solidified and produced crushing pressure, to start to rehydrate and be capable of glide again. This takes the pressure off pain-sensitive structures to enable proper function and elimination of pain.

The Importance of Myofascial Release ...

The Importance of Myofascial Release

Fascia is tough, connective tissue that spreads throughout the body in a three-dimensional web from head to foot without interruption. The fascia surrounds every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel and organ of the body, all the way down to the cellular level. Therefore, malfunction of the fascial system due to trauma, surgery or inflammation can create a binding down of the fascia, resulting in abnormal pressure on nerves, muscles, bones or organs.

It is believed that an extremely high percentage of people suffering with pain, unwanted premature effects of aging and/or lack of motion may be having myofascial problems. These individuals go undiagnosed, as the importance of fascia is just now being recognized. All of the standard tests, such as X-rays, myelograms, CAT scans and electromyography, do not show myofascial restrictions. Fascial restrictions can exert tremendous tensile forces on the fascial, neuromusculoskeletal and pain-sensitive structures. This enormous pressure (approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch) can create the symptoms of pain, decreased muscular tone in the face and neck, or chronic facial tension.

Fascia at the cellular level creates the interstitial spaces and has extremely important functions of support, protection, separation, cellular respiration, nutrition, elimination, metabolism, fluid and lymphatic flow. In other words, the fascia is the immediate environment of every cell of the body. This means that any trauma, surgery or malfunction of the fascia can set up the environment for poor cellular efficiency, necrosis, disease, pain and dysfunction throughout the face, neck and body.

Traumatic or surgical scars can be a problem because they tend to grow inside the body of an individual, in a unique pattern similar to a vine. Scars you see on the surface are just the tip of the iceberg. As scars begin to pull on pain-sensitive structures, they can create pain and deepen the lines of the face, making one look older than necessary.

There are a number of reasons for scars to form. They can be the result of surgery, infection, tissue inflammation or injuries. A scar can appear anywhere on the body. In addition, the composition of scars can vary. They can be sunken, lumpy, colored or flat; they can also be painful and itchy.

One of the most beneficial therapies for scars is myofascial release, which is a gentle, hands-on technique that has been proven to be highly effective in reducing pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, minimizing scars and in increasing tone of the face and neck areas, producing a more youthful appearance.

Scars can have an internal drag effect, coupled with gravity on the musculature and skin, which increases the sagging that tends to occur in some people. Myofascial restrictions tend to overstretch the elastic myofascial complex. The myofascial complex consists of collagen, elastin and musculature, and the stretching of the elastic component is what leads to the acceleration of the aging process, creating lines and wrinkles and decreasing tone.

John

This classical statue symbolically represents what I’ve seen over the years: the inner struggle that most go through. I don’t believe life was meant to be a constant struggle; obviously there will be struggles in life. It seems that even when people are going through a good phase in their lives, they still struggle and we cannot fully engage in life and enjoy ourselves.

A very simplistic way of looking at this is what I call the “Channel 3” and “Channel 5” mentality. The Channel 5 mentality is our intellectual, rational side which has basically dominated our lives due to the educational system. While Channel 5 has great value, it was never meant to function on its own.

Channel 3, which is our intuitive, instinctive side—also known as the healing zone—is also our creative, joyful side and our wise side. This aspect of our consciousness was ridiculed in school. I’m sure you’ve heard, “It’s only your intuition.” Some of the most valuable assets you possess may have been dampened down.

I believe our education was not true education; it was more mass hypnosis. We also have to introduce more of the Channel 3 mentality intro our school system. One of my Myofascial Release Seminar instructors also works in the school system. She is frustrated she cannot offer myofascial release to children in the school system, since nowadays schoolchildren are not to be touched.

In my myofascial unwinding and myofascial rebounding courses, I teach how to unwind and rebound yourself. Driving to work one day, the aforementioned instructor said she had an insight: She could teach the children without touching them. She had one of the most challenging classes, both academically and behaviorally. She started to have them do myofascial rebounding and myofascial unwinding every day, as a group, in class. They absolutely loved it. Within two months, they were the calmest kinds in school, with the best grades.

The great news is our creative, intuitive side can be restored again, and myofascial release allows us to reignite these powerful aspects of ourselves. We can let go of the struggle and when struggle appears in our life, we can deal with it much more effectively and return to a calm, peaceful life.

Sincerely,

John

Atlas

It’s the atlas. No. It’s the axis. No. It’s the nerves. This is the old reductionist perspective of trying to fragment the human being and I call this ‘parking lot therapy.’

If you remember the first morning of Myofascial Release I, within the first couple of minutes of my lecture, I say that the theories of most forms of therapy are logical, but terribly flawed and incomplete. Just because something is logical doesn’t mean it has any basis in reality whatsoever. One question I would ask these proponents of various methods is “Does your patient get off the treatment table?” You see, they don’t understand the effects of gravity on the fascial system. Then I would ask “Do you understand the effects of the fascial system when restricted in the gravitational field?”

You can massage, manipulate, put heat on different areas and the patient may appear well aligned and relatively pain free; however, all the rules change when the person gets off the treatment table and reloads in the gravitational field. At that point the fascia rules and all the restrictions capable of 2,000 lbs per square inch of pressure on pain sensitive structures return the system to dysfunction in a very short period of time.

You hear about people returning for a quick fix week after week, year after year. This is why I call it ‘parking lot therapy’ because by the time the patient gets out to the parking lot their symptoms have returned.

If it wasn’t for that damn gravity, everything would be fine! 🙂

"Ancient Wisdom"

John wanted to thank Cheryl Timm for speaking on the topic of the energy of the universe which has been called the “tao.” For years John has called Myofascial Release the “Zen of Therapy” and her post was beautifully written, very accurate, and right on. Cheryl’s post was made December 11th, and I think you would find it quite interesting.

Myofascial Release does have to do with the tao. The tao is a way of describing our electromagnetic field, our mind, or love, a lot of different labels to describe this incredibly powerful energy! It is our life force.

This is why it behooves us to move into Channel 3 to help us be the best therapist we can be. But also, be in touch with this incredible universal energy or wisdom.

Myofascial Release is based on ancient wisdom. As you know from John’s story, he had to be broken to wake up. Michelangelo, Leonardo DaVinci, Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, and all the great geniuses of the world have somehow tapped into the Channel 3 experience. We all have this level of genius available to us through Myofascial Release if we pursue getting treated enough to clear out the clutter.

So, as you know, Myofascial Release does not force or make things happen. We allow, we flow, we quiet our minds and tap into this ancient wisdom. The energy of the ancient wisdom is love coursing through the microtubules of your fascial system.

I hope I can encourage you all to pursue spending more and more time in the MFR/Channel 3 mode. It benefits you in a very significant way! Those of you interested in following up, you may want to look into the writings and videos of Alan Watts. He is a student of Shunryu Suzuki, who is an expert in Zen philosophy. Very fascinating stuff! Alan Watts has a very interesting way of writing. As you read, he develops images in your mind to allow you to understand things on a deeper Channel 3 level.

He used to live in Sausalito, California on a house boat years ago. There are lots of videos out with him now, and his books, which I highly recommend reading. A good book to start with is Cloud-Hidden, Whereabouts Unknown: A Mountain Journal. Here is a link to a multitude of writings by Alan Watts, which are all fascinating: https://alanwatts.org/books

You are the light in the darkness !

Chaos……Traditional therapy abhors chaos. It is terrified of it. The myofascial release approach includes chaos and systems theory, whose research clearly shows that when we go into chaos in a safe therapeutic setting, it creates the possibility of meaningful change, growth and authentic healing to occur. Because we have such an incredible mind in every cell of our bodies, as we go through chaos we then re emerge at a higher level of organization, mental clarity and peace.

We've seen a lethargy out there for some people. ☹ They seem to have become paralyzed in fear with the chaos that is occurring in the world. They have stopped taking seminars or retaking them.
Do not let fear paralyze you ! A true myofascial therapist feels the fear, leans into the wind and acts ! There's a lot of new, important information that is emerging, that John has now added to the seminars that you may not be aware of. It supports everything you do as a myofascial therapist and will deepen your expertise in myofascial release.

Retaking seminars is vital and will help you learn new techniques, remind you of techniques you may have forgotten, and because of the immense group energy that John creates, it will help you to reduce your pain, greatly increase your awareness and sensitivity as well as an opportunity for authentic healing……also, it is a lot of fun !!! 😊

With myofascial release, you are the light in the darkness.

So please join us soon and we hope you enjoy this important information that verifies everything from John's creative insights over the last 50 years.

John sends his love to all of you.

Ferocity !!!

Soften your visual focus, slow your breathing and feel the energy of this encounter between this beautiful and incredible snow leopard and this powerful ram. Get a sense of the energy between them. They are both in the present moment and in the ‘now’. In a moment like this, to save your life, Channel 5, your intellectual side has no place whatsoever. It is too slow to react.

The ferocity of the moment; this intensity comes from a deep inner calmness, clarity and amazing power of your true self. This is the type of energy that helps other people and why it is so important to be in the ‘now’ and be centered with your patients/clients. It doesn’t have to be a life-or-death situation but it is the same focus and energy that is both a narrow and an open focus. Channel 3 is a timeless, spaceless dimension. We were meant to live in Channel 3 and utilize Channel 5 occasionally.

Channel 3 is responsive and is the only place where we are truly alive. I hope this helps you have a great day and become the therapist you have the potential to be!
Love,

John

I recommend everyone read the book about Michaelangelo called “The Agony & Ecstasy” by Irving Stone, one of the world’s most renowned authors. He goes through the life of Michaelangelo and the struggles he went through as an artist. He sculpted huge blocks of marble. The statue of David is incredible and almost two stories high. It started as a flawed piece of marble, however Michaelangelo found the beauty in it.

As you know, Myofascial Release is an art and you are all becoming therapeutic artists. I think that this will inspire you and you will find it incredibly interesting. He said that before he sculpted the marble, he stood back so he could see the whole block and he quieted his mind, opened his visual focus and he would eventually see the image within. He saw his role as an artist to chip away at the marble to allow the inner beauty to emerge. He was centering himself.
A lot of times a patient or client will say they are broken and you can tell them they are not and that their spirit or essence is never broken. It is beautiful and powerful. Our role as therapists and physicians is to chip away the outdated belief systems that our society has thrust upon us. We help with unresolved emotions and release the physical restrictions so that their inner beauty can emerge. This is true healing 😊

Our Fractal Universe

Dear Stephanie Wilson,

This is John. You asked about the relationship of fractals to the fascial system.

The fascial system is a fractal system, as is the circulatory, lymphatic and muscular systems and literally every cell of our bodies has a fractal nature.

Traditional science has been using Euclidean geometry, which has straight lines and sharp angles that describes a two-dimensional world that doesn’t exist. We have been led astray! Our world and the fascial system is three-dimensional and beyond (bio-tensegrity).
Benoît Mandelbrot, a French mathematician, discovered the nature of the fractal system in 1976. In 1976, he changed science, however most scientists do not have a clue and most refuse to look at other possibilities due to only receiving grant money if they stay within the rigid boundaries of the traditional paradigm. So, unfortunately, the traditional paradigm stifles new ideas, curiosity and growth. ☹
Fractal is a Latin word for ‘fractured’. There are no straight lines in nature. Benoît Mandelbrot discovered how fractals connect everything. You can simply google his name and you will see a number of his videos.

I just recently published my new seminar brochure and utilized this beautiful, translucent hibiscus as an example of the fractal nature that is in everything we see. Look at the internal architecture where it continues to become smaller and smaller, beyond what our eyes an actually see. This is what is called the ‘principle of self-similarity’.
The good news is that we now have just exceeded 12,800 members on MFR Insight. If you have time this weekend, read the post titled “Where the Rubber Meets the Road” for more information about this. View the podcast video that Unu Tran shared on MFR Insight recently. I think you will find it fascinating. I appreciate the incredible brilliance of Terrence Howard – you can just feel his amazing intelligence just sparkle and flow freely. He is describing the concepts we have talked about for decades and why Myofascial Release is so successful and what we all feel under our hands every day. Here is the link to the podcast video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fS68pXbzy7U

I am encouraging you all to engage. In my post “Where the Rubber Hits the Road”, one of the therapists commented on what a fascinating conversation this is. It is - so let’s keep it going. Just be curious and let us know any questions, insights or feelings you have come up from this fascinating information. There is an exciting new world emerging out there and we will be a large part of it.
Join us in this incredible, exciting journey as all of this information unfolds that supports everything we do, and help other people understand the importance of what you do everyday with Myofascial Release.

I hope you all have a great weekend!

"Where the Rubber Hits the Road”

Unu Tran and Rob Crampton,
Thanks for the suggestions. Unu and Rob stated this interview with Terrence Howard had myofascial release written all over it. I think you’ll find it quite interesting. I’d suggest you all listen to it.
Here is the link to the podcast:

You’ll hear the themes that you’ve heard during my Myofascial Release seminars multiple times. The power of vortices, how the Euclidean geometry that scientists use has to do with a flat two-dimensional world that doesn’t exist. Myofascial Release has clearly shown us the fractal world of multi dimensions. Fractal geometry is the precision that scientists need to utilize. I highly recommend reading Victor Schauberger’s book on vortices. He is an absolutely incredibly brilliant man.

Rob mentioned Walter Russell. I read his books many years ago – another brilliant person. There is a book that you may want to read called “The Man Who Tapped the Secrets of the Universe” by Glen Clark. It’s a small book, sort of like an encapsulation of Walter Russell’s life and many of his incredible ideas. He has written many other books that I think you will find interesting.

Walter Russell goes on to say that we are operating from mediocrity when we are in the self-inflicted and programmed state of channel 5. Another thing that Walter Russell says is that greatness is not written in books, nor can they be found in schools, they are from our inner consciousness, which is channel 3. To quote Mark Twain, I am not sure I have it exactly correctly but basically, he said “it took me years to get over my education!” 😊

Peter Bort has an incredible mind and I’d be curious of your insights about all of this. So many of the things that came up in these videos are the concepts we’ve discussed multiple times in my Myofascial Release seminars - our fractal universe, there are no straight lines in our world, the importance to be centered in channel 3, how our programming has stifled our potential. Also Dr. Rupert Shelldrake, an incredible scientist from Cambridge University, England, has written a fascinating book called “The Presence of the Past” where he expands upon his theory of morphic resonance. It’s interesting to me that so much of what I have shared with you all at seminars came to me directly from my intuition and experience and curiosity of treating patients over 40 years ago.
I was able to meld together this beautiful mosaic that I now call the Myofascial Release approach. It’s good to see that some scientists are looking beyond their limitations of their traditional paradigm and exploring the scientific rationale that begins to describe what we do every day with our hands, mind and heart.

The bottom line is we are doing what science is looking for, results! Magnificent results that are profound, beautiful and enlightening and freeing others from significant pain. This is authentic therapy!
Myofascial Release is where the rubber hits the road!...It’s important to conceptualize things but without proper action it is meaningless. The action and theory of traditional therapy is terribly incomplete and flawed. We are all achieving the compassionate results that everyone so desperately needs.

You are all amazing geniuses. To unleash your latent potential, be treated by a Myofascial Release therapist that you trust, treat yourself regularly and attend and/or re-attend the seminars. The highly charged power of the environment of the seminars allows us to make massive changes in a short period of time.
Know that your potential will be fully realized! My intuition never let me down, nor will yours. Trust your intuition!

I love you
John

Stagnation vs. Liquid Crystalline Flow

As you all know, we have discussed in the seminars how healthcare studies dead people thinking somehow, that would help us understand the living human being. You have heard me say in seminars that science studying dead people is the equivalent of not understanding the difference between a telephone pole and a living tree.

This image is the skeleton/fascial system of a beautiful saguaro cactus. It takes about 75 years for a cactus to grow an arm, so this cactus was well over 100 years old.

Take notice of its rigidity and multiple convolutions. The living cactus is flexible and full of fluid and life. In life, as with every plant, animal and human, the liquid crystalline fluidity of our system was ignored. It is this liquid crystalline fluid that courses through the microtubules of the fascial system in everything that carries oxygen, hydration, nutrition, biochemicals, information and energy that every plant, animal and human needs to thrive. Oh, did I forget - consciousness ! This is in the form of photons flowing within the fluid.

Stagnation…All humans, animals and plants require fluid flow. The unrecognized problem has been that from trauma, the fascial system becomes more and more viscous, diminishing or blocking fluid flow. This leads to a state of stagnation, internal physiological chaos and significant medical problems. It also blocks the flow of life force within everything, along with the essential vibratory frequency necessary for health, harmony and homeostasis (the three H’s).

Love,
John
