🍂✨ The Magic of the Butterfly Hawk Moth ✨🍂

Every fall, like clockwork, I notice a rare and whimsical visitor in a neighbor’s yard - the Butterfly Hawk Moth . Often mistaken for a hummingbird or butterfly, it hovers gracefully at the salvia flowers, its wings a blur, sipping nectar as though it’s floating in from another world.

I only ever see them this time of year, and each time it feels like a gift - a reminder of the mystery and magic woven into the fabric of nature. 🌸🦋🌙

In Eastern medicine, autumn is the season of the Metal element, a time for refinement and letting go. The Butterfly Hawk Moth embodies this wisdom: appearing briefly, beautifully, and then disappearing again, reminding us that true beauty lies in the fleeting, in the willingness to release. 🍁

Just as the trees release their leaves, we too are invited to let go of what no longer serves, so that our essence may shine more clearly. The moth is a messenger of this seasonal truth - fairy-like, rare, and full of quiet power.

May we honor the lessons of this magical creature as we step deeper into autumn’s embrace.

✨ This week I’m honoring a beloved year long patient who is nearing the end of his time in this body. What moves me most is the joy he’s radiating even now - surrounded by family, offering love, and beautifully letting go.

In his pulses I felt what we call the husband–wife imbalance - when the right side is much stronger than the left. In Five Element acupuncture, this often signifies that the spirit is preparing to cross over. It’s a sacred moment to witness, and it reminds me of the deep connection between body, soul, and spirit at the end of life.

He sent me this haiku that he wrote recently and I’d like to share it here as his parting gift of wisdom:

Here now and soon gone.
All I remember of this.
Is impermanence.

Even impermanence
Comes and goes in its own time.
The flow of the Tao.

Grief has no schedule.
Grace of the Holy Spirit.
It comes when it wills.

If I’ve said it once
I’ve said it a thousand times
Just let it all go!

May these words be an offering - for him, for those who love him, and for all of us walking the path of impermanence. 🍁
