There is a lesser known trail that starts right here as an alternate to ascend Cathedral. It is stunning. I always have called it the Canyon Side of Cathedral. Maybe one day there will be an official name for this way up to the top of this monolith

Wellness comes in many forms.
Sometimes it means slowing down. Other times it means pushing yourself to go further than you thought possible.

This weekend, and I hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back in one day. It’s the second year in a row we’ve done this, and each time the experience is completely new. I’ve been hiking the Canyon almost every year since I was 12, and no matter how many times I go, it never loses its magic.

Three years ago I hiked South Rim to North Rim.
Last year we went down South Kaibab and up Bright Angel.
This year, with the River Trail closed, we made the full roundtrip on South Kaibab.

We knew it would be tough. South Kaibab is steep, fully exposed, and has no water. We started early, hiking by 4:30 AM, reaching Phantom Ranch before the sun brought the heat. We rationed water carefully, 4.5 liters each, and it was just enough.

Originally, we planned to hike up Bright Angel. But the closed connector trail forced us to adapt. We stayed calm, made a new plan, and tackled the ascent the same way we approached the day: one step at a time, with focus and respect for the challenge.

This hike reminded me that wellness isn’t just about rest or relaxation. Sometimes it’s about showing up, being prepared, and facing something hard with determination. It’s about knowing your limits and finding the strength to go beyond them.

You don’t have to run marathons or hike the Grand Canyon to practice wellness. But you do have to choose yourself. Choose movement. Choose growth. Choose to keep going, even when it’s steep.

That’s where transformation happens.
