Safely dispose of old or unwanted meds!

Take Back Day is happening next Saturday, Oct. 25! The Anacortes Police Dept. is hosting an event from 10 am - 2 pm. If you can't make it to the event, find year-round ways to safely dispose of unneeded and expired medications at www.MedTakeBackWashington.org

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is held biannually, on the last Saturdays of April and October, to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential misuse of medications.

🎃 Don’t Wait for January—Start Moving Now! 🎃

The holiday season can sneak up fast, and it’s easy to tell ourselves we’ll “start fresh” in the new year. But staying active now, even through Halloween candy season, helps you keep your balance, strength, and energy all winter long.

At United Fitness, we believe consistency is the real magic. A few steady workouts each week make a bigger difference than any New Year’s resolution that starts on January 1st. 💪

👟 Here’s how to stay on track this fall:

Keep your same workout days, even if you shorten the time.

Pair your favorite class or routine with a fun fall treat afterward—consistency deserves a small reward!

Bring a friend or spouse to stay accountable through the holidays.

Start before the rush, and you’ll already feel stronger when everyone else is just getting started in January.

🍂 Stay steady. Stay strong. Stay United. 🍂

💡 Exercise is like medicine for the body and the brain!
Dr. McGinnis recommends aiming for 150 minutes of moderate activity each week (like brisk walking). Start with just a few minutes a day and build up gradually—adding 5–10 minutes each week until you reach your goal.

🧠 Here’s the exciting part: research shows that after about six months of regular exercise, the brain starts reaping big rewards. Exercise boosts memory, focus, and overall cognitive health—helping you stay sharp and independent as you age.

The key? Be patient, stay consistent, and think of exercise as a lifelong prescription for both body and mind.

Check out this month's member spotlight!

•How long have you attended United Fitness Center?
I started coming to the fitness center in August 2024.

•Why did you join United Fitness Center?
I had attended the Heart Healthy program at Skagit Valley Hospital before covid, but to start up again I need a physician’s referral. Due to miscommunication, I was not able to go. So, I looked for fitness opportunities outside of Mount Vernon. I was familiar with UGH (I worked for UGH in 1979-80) and learned they had a dedicated fitness center. I could have participated under the Silver Sneakers program for free, but I saw value in the classes, so I signed up for those. I was impressed with the equipment, the fitness room, the helpful staff, and the friendly participants.

•Why do you continue to attend United Fitness Center?
My health has improved so much in the last 12 months. I’ve had 3 surgeries in four years and those were taking a toll. I also have a herniated disc at L-5, S-1. My back pain decreased after a month of 1-1 coaching with Julie to strengthen my core. I used to rub my lower back constantly. I hardly ever need to do that anymore! I can now spend more time working in the hard and garden without pain. I am dancing and swimming again too!

•What do you enjoy doing at the gym?
I have enjoyed all the fitness classes that I have tried from Golden Yoga to Dance Fit to Gold classes. The instructors make the classes fun and yet know how to get each of us to exercise to our best potential. I find that warming up on the rowing machine gets me going and ready for the next activity that day, whether that is the treadmill or a fitness class.

•What advice would you pass on to others considering starting an exercise routine?
Pick a schedule and stick to it!! Put it on your calendar and plan all your other activities around that schedule. If you find you must reschedule, do it as soon as you know your schedule must change that week. Keep the class schedule on your refrigerator for quick reference!
