🎄 Day 23 of our 25 Days of Christmas! 🎄

💙 Supporting Participation & Communication for Children with ASD During the Holidays

The holidays can be exciting and overwhelming. New routines, busy spaces, and big expectations can make it harder for some children to join in — and that’s okay.

✨ Holiday strategies that help:

🎁 Follow your child’s lead
Let them engage in holiday activities in their own way

🎄 Keep language simple
Short phrases and clear models reduce pressure

⏸️ Pause & wait
Give extra time to process and respond

🎅 Offer choices
“Lights on or off?” “Cookie or ornament?”

🧩 Honor all communication
Words, gestures, AAC, pointing, or movement all count

💙 Holiday participation doesn’t have to look a certain way.
💙 Quiet moments, observing, or parallel play are meaningful too.
💙 Connection comes before expectations.

Wishing you a season filled with understanding, flexibility, and joy 🎄✨

🎄 Day 21 of our 25 Days of Christmas! 🎄

🛒 Turn store trips into language opportunities!
Whether you’re running errands or doing holiday shopping, everyday trips to the store are full of chances to build speech and language skills.

🗣️ Try targeting:
• Vocabulary (foods, clothing, toys, community helpers)
• Categories (things you buy at the grocery store vs. clothing store)
• WH-questions (What do we need? Where do we find it?)
• Requesting & commenting
• Sequencing (first we get…, next we…, last we…)

💬 Model language like:
👉 “We need to buy ___.”
👉 “I see ___.”
👉 “Where do we find the ___?”
👉 “First/next/last…”

✨ These skills can be practiced before, during, or after the store trip—no extra materials needed!

⛄ Day 16 of Holiday Language Fun! ⛄

Here in New England, we’re lucky enough to have real snow right now ❄️—but this activity works just as well outside in the snow OR inside as a craft!

🧺 Materials (for the indoor craft):

• Paper circles (or cut white paper)
• Cotton balls
• Buttons
• Markers
• Glue
• Scarf or hat cutouts (optional!)

🎨 How to Make Your Snowman:

1️⃣ Glue the circles together to make the body
2️⃣ Add cotton balls for texture
3️⃣ Draw or glue on eyes, nose, and mouth
4️⃣ Decorate with buttons, a scarf, or a hat

🧠 Language skills to target while you build:
• Following 1–3 step directions
• Sequencing (first, next, last)
• Describing size, color, and body parts
• Using complete sentences

💡 SLP Tip:
Model phrases like:
“First we make the body.”
“The snowman has a carrot nose.”
“I see a big/small snowball.”

Whether you’re bundling up outside or crafting inside, you’re building language through play ❤️
