It’s been 35 years since I first started sneaking into the music conservatory at my school to practice piano. I was eventually hired as a receptionist and earned work-study scholarships to learn several instruments.

This weekend was full of music — I played for worship services yesterday, sang at a nursing home with my family, and today I’m playing professionally for another church. 🎹✨

Music speaks where words fall short — it connects heart to heart.

My hope is that everyone can experience this same connection — to their communities, their faith, and their families. 💛

After 24 years in the United States, this is the first time I’ve had the chance to take this picture. The Academy of Doctors of Audiology is in Washington, D.C. this week, advocating for greater access to audiology care. I truly love this profession—we change lives every day—and I only wish my patients had better access to the care they need and deserve.

One hard part about our jobs is that we have to confront patients with the truth that they have been living with untreated hearing loss.

You’re probably thinking, “I assume if someone is getting their hearing tested, it’s because they KNOW they have hearing loss.”

Unlike other medical conditions, hearing loss happens so slowly over time that it can go undetected for years. Unfortunately, hearing loss (unlike vision loss) is easy to blame on others.

Raise your hand in the comments if you or someone you know has said...

“This restaurant is too noisy. What did you say?”
“Why does she keep mumbling?”
“I can hear you fine. I just can’t understand you!”

Ringing, buzzing, humming, chirping, record playing, clicking, pulsing! Because every patient describes their tinnitus differently, treatment options need to be handled on a case-by-case basis. I tell my patients that their primary objective is to lower the perception of their tinnitus, allowing them to live more comfortable, relaxed, and content lives.

No FDA-approved medications have been shown to reverse the neural hyperactivity at the root of tinnitus (ata.org). Our facility, we have seen significant success in tinnitus patients, educational counseling, hearing aids, and sound therapies.
