Fall is approaching, so here are some tips to ensure your pets' safety this season.

1. Antifreeze can be deadly if ingested by humans and animals. Cats and dogs are known to lick this sweet-tasting substance, so check your car for leaks and store all antifreeze bottles away from your pets.

2. Cold weather poses a threat to pets. Avoid leaving your pets outside for extended periods, especially when temperatures are below 32 degrees. Such cold weather can lead to hypothermia and frostbite in dogs and cats. Most pets, especially puppies, senior pets, and smaller animals, need temperatures above 70 degrees to be completely comfortable. If needed, a warm jacket or sweater can help keep your dog warm during the winter.

3. Watch out for ticks, as it is tick season in many areas. Your dog may pick up ticks when walking, exploring, and playing in the cool autumn leaves.

4. Be careful with holiday treats. In addition to known hazards such as chocolate, cooked bones, and raw bread dough, many other fruits and vegetables can also be life-threatening to pets. Make sure these foods, as well as other hazards, are kept out of reach.

5. Be careful with decorations. Many shiny, new decorations look like really fun toys for your pets. Make sure decorations are displayed far enough away from your pets, many of them contain toxic metals and can become choking hazards.

Following the tips above should help prepare you for the season and ensure that your pets remain safe and comfortable.

Keep Your Dog’s Paws Safe in the Summer Heat

Warm weather is the perfect time to get outside and walk your dog.

With temperatures rising over 90° F, outdoor surfaces such as asphalt, concrete, dirt, and sand soak up the summer sun for hours and hours each day. Ground temperatures can reach well over 145° F after exposure to a full day of direct sunlight.

Remember these tips for walking your dog in hot weather:- Walk your dog early in the morning or evening when the sun is setting and the ground has had some time to cool down.- Test the pavement or any other surface by placing a bare hand or foot on the ground for 15 seconds. If you are unable to hold your hand there for the full time, then it is too hot to walk your dog.- Choose a route that allows your dog to walk on grass most of the time, like a park, to prevent their paws from getting burnt.- If your dog has been swimming, their paws may be more sensitive to hot surfaces, so be extra cautious after a swim.

MICROCHIPPING
"Why should my pet have a microchip if she already wears a collar with an ID tag?" you might wonder. Or maybe you're thinking, "My pet never runs off, so a microchip isn't necessary." While it's great to have an ID tag on your pet's collar, it's still a good idea to consider a microchip. Collars and tags can get lost or damaged, leaving your pet without identification. A microchip provides a permanent backup plan to help ensure your pet can be identified and returned to you if they ever get lost.
"Call us at 374-5755 if you are interested in getting your pet microchipped!"

Ear Clipping of Feral Cats

Clipping, or ear-tipping, a cat's ear identifies that the cat has been spayed or neutered and is part of a trap-neuter-return (TNR) program. It's a safe, clean, and painless procedure done while the cat is already under anesthesia for the spay or neuter surgery. The top 3/8 inch of the ear is removed, usually from the right ear but sometimes from the left. The ear heals quickly and doesn't require any further attention. Ear-tipping is a preferred method for identifying community cats because getting close to them is difficult, and identification needs to be visible from a distance. It can help prevent feral cats from being unnecessarily trapped and stressed by being anesthetized again. It can also help people who feed the cats keep track of them and notice if a new cat has joined the community.
