We're filled with gratitude seeing our amazing community member Michelle Brown wearing her Shanteel shirt with pride while soaking in the island energy. Her presence is a reminder that the spirit of Shanteel lives within each of us and continues to grow wherever we are.

Thank you, Michelle, for carrying the heart of our sanctuary with you and sharing it with the world.

Bhujangasana, or Cobra Pose, is a heart-opening backbend rooted in the ancient traditions of Hatha Yoga. The word comes from Sanskrit: 🐍 Bhujanga = serpent 🧘‍♀️ Asana = posture or seat

This posture is part of the classical Sun Salutation sequence and is said to awaken inner strength, ignite vitality, and stimulate the energy centers along the spine... especially the solar plexus which is associated with willpower and confidence.

Symbolically, the cobra is a creature of transformation and heightened awareness. In yogic texts, it represents the rising of Kundalini energy, often depicted as a coiled serpent at the base of the spine. When practiced with mindfulness and alignment, Bhujangasana is said to:
✨ Strengthen the back and shoulders
✨ Gently increase spinal mobility
✨ Support emotional release through chest expansion
✨ Boost circulation and energize the body

It’s also considered a grounding pose, encouraging presence and patience as we rise from the earth with steadiness—just like a serpent lifting from rest into alertness. At Shanteel, we honor Cobra Pose not as a means to force, but as an invitation to rise with grace. Move slowly, breathe deeply, and notice how even subtle heart openers can shift your perspective from within.

Sometimes you have to turn things upside down to see more clearly. Inversions are powerful tools for rewiring the nervous system, increasing circulation, and reconnecting to presence. When the world feels overwhelming, flipping your perspective can remind you that you’re capable of more than you think. At Shanteel, we meet you where you are, offering guidance and support as you explore the edges of your practice...right-side up or upside down.

Meet Our Teacher: Amy Canning! Amy began her yoga journey several years ago practicing at local gyms/fitness centers, yoga studios and at home. In the summer of 2022 after teaching second grade during the pandemic, she felt like she was spinning in circles “like a tornado.” Amy found she needed yoga a lot more in her life, so she began practicing more frequently at the studio and at home. After practicing she would always feel more grounded and lighter and felt she was able to handle the pressures of the world with a lot more calmness and grace!

Considering Amy’s love of learning and teaching, in the summer of 2023 she enrolled in a 200 YTT at Shanteel Yoga Sanctuary in Sellersville, Pa. A journey she was grateful she had the opportunity to experience! She completed her 200 YTT in June of 2024. If that wasn’t enough, she decided she wanted to immerse herself even more into the world of yoga so she traveled to Costa Rica and completed her 300 YTT at Vida Asana, in December of 2024. During her training in Costa Rica, Amy was also attuned to practice Reiki, providing a holistic approach to yoga through energy-balancing techniques.

Amy recently retired from teaching second grade and is now ready to inspire adults and children to live calmer and more grounded lives through yoga! She wants her students to be able to be their authentic selves and feel comfortable practicing yoga, no matter what their level might be!

Come take one of Amy's classes at Shanteel:
- Calming Candlelight Yoga (6:00pm Wednesdays - New Britain)
- Chair Yoga (9:30am Thursdays - Sellersville)

DID YOU KNOW: yoga has a history stretching back over 5,000 years? It originated in ancient India as a holistic practice aimed at uniting the body, mind, and spirit. The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit root "yuj," which means "to join" or "to yoke." This idea of "union" is at the core of yoga philosophy, representing the connection between the individual self (atman) and the universal consciousness (Brahman).

Historically, yoga was not just about physical postures (asanas); it encompassed a complete system of living, including breathwork (pranayama), meditation (dhyana), ethical disciplines, and self-inquiry. These practices were designed to bring balance, inner peace, and a deeper understanding of oneself and the world.

Today, yoga continues to embody this sense of union, helping practitioners bridge the gap between their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It’s a practice that goes far beyond the mat, offering tools for personal growth, mindfulness, and living with purpose. 🌟

Whether you’re seeking better physical health, stress relief, or a deeper connection to yourself and the universe, yoga invites you to explore this timeless tradition. 🧘‍♀️

This is where the practice lands. After the movement, the breath and the effort, there’s rest. Not just stillness, but integration. Not just quiet, but healing. This is yoga too. Allow yourself a moment to just be.

Feeling low? Yoga can naturally lift your spirits! When you practice yoga, your brain releases endorphins, the “feel-good” chemicals that improve your mood. At the same time, yoga lowers cortisol levels, reducing stress and fatigue. Poses like Camel, Warrior II, and Tree Pose not only energize your body but also foster a sense of confidence and positivity. Yoga is like a natural antidepressant that nourishes both your mind and body!

5 Yoga Poses to Help You Sleep Better 🧘‍♀️✨ If you’ve ever found yourself tossing and turning at night, yoga might be the secret to drifting off peacefully. By calming the mind, releasing muscle tension, and grounding your energy, yoga can help you transition smoothly into restful sleep. Try incorporating these five gentle poses into your evening routine:

1️⃣ Child’s Pose (Balasana):
This nurturing pose helps you feel grounded and safe while gently stretching the lower back, hips, and thighs. Start by sitting back on your heels, fold forward, and rest your forehead on the mat. Stretch your arms out in front or keep them by your sides. Focus on slow, deep belly breaths, allowing your body to soften and release the tension of the day.

2️⃣ Legs-Up-the-Wall (Viparita Karani):
A restorative favorite, this pose is perfect for soothing your nervous system and improving blood flow after a long day. Lie on your back and swing your legs up against a wall, keeping them straight or slightly bent. Place your hands on your belly or by your sides, close your eyes, and enjoy the sensation of relaxation as you breathe deeply.

3️⃣ Supine Twist (Supta Matsyendrasana):
Twisting poses can help release stress and tension held in your spine and shoulders while gently massaging your digestive organs, aiding relaxation. Lie on your back, hug one knee to your chest, and guide it across your body while keeping your opposite shoulder grounded. Repeat on both sides, taking slow breaths to deepen the stretch.

4️⃣ Seated Forward Fold (Paschimottanasana):
A deeply calming pose that stretches the hamstrings, lower back, and spine, this posture encourages inward focus and relaxation. Sit with your legs extended, inhale to lengthen your spine, and exhale as you fold forward over your legs. Rest your hands on your shins, ankles, or feet, and let gravity do the work. Breathe deeply, feeling your body release any lingering tension.

5️⃣ Co**se Pose (Savasana):
The ultimate relaxation pose, Savasana helps signal to your body that it’s time to rest. Lie flat on your back with your arms relaxed at your sides, palms facing up. Close your eyes and focus on your breath or use a guided meditation to help you settle. Allow your body to fully relax, noticing how the support of the ground beneath you feels.

Tips for Your Evening Practice:
🌙Practice these poses in a quiet, dimly lit space to promote relaxation.
🌙Pair your yoga routine with calming music or essential oils like lavender to enhance the mood.
🌙Breathe deeply, inhaling for a count of four and exhaling for a count of six to activate your body’s relaxation response.
🌙Make this part of your nightly ritual to signal to your mind and body that it’s time to unwind.

Sleep is essential for our overall health and well-being, and yoga is a simple yet powerful tool to help you create the ideal environment for rest. With just a few mindful movements, you can shift your energy, let go of stress, and prepare for a restorative night’s sleep.

Sweet dreams, yogis! 🌙🧘‍♀️
