A Gentle Reminder...

Grief takes time, and that's okay. Take time to care for yourself through it as you would care for other people going through the same situation.

Focus on allowing yourself to rest, feeding your body, and getting outside for fresh air and movement. Healing takes time. Be patient with yourself.

"Through the years I have learned a great deal from many grieving children and their families. They have taught me which words work best when talking to children about death. Here are some general concepts I suggest companions use when talking with children about death, dying, grief, and mourning."

"It’s normal to experience anxiety in grief. While it’s not pleasant to feel anxious, it’s natural because loss shakes our sense of security in the present and often raises worries about the future. Anxiety is a form of fear. Of course, we feel afraid when someone important to us dies. How will we survive without them? What will our lives be like? What if something happens to others we care about?"

Attending a funeral for someone of a different faith may seem a bit intimidating, but the most important aspect is the support you are showing to those who are grieving. A couple of things to keep in mind that may set your mind at ease:

1. What to wear - Consider the culture or faith of the family when choosing what to wear to the service.
2. Participation - Remember that while you are showing support by attending, you are not obligated to participate in any religious practices that you aren't familiar or comfortable with.

It's most important to remember that your support and compassion are appreciated by those who are grieving.

Family Owned since 1962

Our Founder, Robert Elton Parrish, was born in Johnston County March 13, 1928. After graduating high school he served in the US Marine Corps. In 1951 He graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science , and in 1962 became owner and President of Parrish Funeral Home.

Our caring staff of funeral professionals is dedicated to helping families create a meaningful funeral. We know every family is unique, which is why we spend time learning about your loved one, so that a visitation and celebration of life will reflect your faith, your culture, your family, and your traditions.

We are proud to be family owned, and also proud to own and operate Underwood Funeral Home, located 522 South Brightleaf Boulevard, Smithfield. It is there we own and operate our own crematory. Your loved one never leaves our care.
