I just got back from another visit to Cape Cod with a good friend. You may wonder why I make a point of coming down to the Cape in late autumn when the weather tends to be less predictable, but it’s all about the marshes. At this time of year, the marsh grasses turn a golden color that shimmers in the low light of sunrise and sunset. It’s an ideal time to capture the blue salt water creeks as they snake their way through the orange marshes, creating a color contrast unmatched at any other time.

I took this photo from a drone at sunset. The higher perspective catches intriguing patterns in the marsh along with the meandering creek and lingering foliage on the trees in the distance.

1. You can’t analyze your way into healing.
The intellect can help you understand your pain, but it cannot release it. The nervous system doesn’t speak your native language; it speaks sensation, tension, breath, and vibration.

When trauma occurs, your body freezes to protect you. Thinking too much about the past often reinforces the freeze; it replays the same story without ever addressing the underlying emotion.

Somatic work drops beneath the story and lets the body complete what was once interrupted.
