Welcome baby Fisher, my fifth boy in a row this summer! He joined us after a short and sweet labor, 12 days after his due date and I’m happy this mama lives right around the corner. He was 9 pound exactly, born en caul after six minutes of pushing. :) He’s the third pea in a pod, the third musketeer, and a spitting image of his two big brothers. What a bright eyed and bushy tailed little guy! Congratulations Caitlyn and Ben!

Welcome baby Kalvin! VBACs are so good for my heart, this sweet family overcame so much uncertainly and did so much work to have this birth go differently than last time, and it paid off! In the end we needed some pain relief for intense back labor but we were again supported to achieve our goals, and Dr. Epstein enabled this vbac to finish in the hospital. I’m so grateful for policy change and the support of this provider! Baby Kalvin weighed a few grams shy of 9 pounds, and had hardly a cone head on him. Congratulations Brandy and Derek and big brother Parker! You did it!

Next came baby Clement! His parents worked for as long as possible to get labor started at home after his water ruptured, with great humor and lots of good effort. In the end we decided to go get some additional help to move things along, and had a great experience transferring in. Shoutout to Dr. Novak who supported them to have their low intervention ideals respected even in the hospital, and baby Clement headed right out of there and they had a lovely birth. Best possible scenario for a transfer, and they were able to come right back to my care the next morning. So grateful! Baby Clement weighed 6lb 14 ounces and is already fattening right up. Congratulations Heather and Andrew on your bright eyed boy!

Welcome baby Levi! He was born with the dawn on his due date, 7/7, weighing 7lb. 7oz. with a completely uneventful double nuchal cord wrap. (around the neck x2) He was born peacefully in the water after a quick labor, and a lovely redemptive birth. His mama was so intuitive in her power and was able to ease him out into her own hands, and I am all about that life! Congratulations Moriah and Dave on another handsome son! :)

Raise your hand if this is among the top ten questions you get from people considering a non-hospital birth.

A nuchal cord is a medical way of saying that baby’s cord is wrapped around their neck. ⁣
⁣
This is something you’ve probably heard about and you may even know someone who had this happen during their birth. ⁣
⁣
❗This isn’t at all surprising because nuchal cords are actually quite common – occurring in a little more than 1 in 3 births!⁣
⁣
And even though the idea of the cord being wrapped around the neck seems very scary, in reality, the chance of any complications is rare. ⁣
⁣
Sometimes we know about nuchal cords ahead of time because they are seen on ultrasound, but in many cases, we don’t know until baby is born.⁣
⁣
👉🏻 The most common complication occurs during labor. ⁣
⁣
Basically, when the cord is wrapped around baby’s neck, it can be compressed during contractions, which in turn reduces the amount of blood (and therefore oxygen) that is getting to baby. ⁣
⁣
Often time, we see a decrease in baby’s heart rate on the fetal monitor, which tells us the cord is being compressed in some way - and many times we can intervene!⁣
⁣
🤔 Did you know that this usually isn’t a cause for complications during birth?

Welcome baby Micah! I always say if you have enough space to make a baby, you have enough space to have a baby, and we all got cozy in this cute little camper trailer for this lovely birth. It was such a smooth birth for these first time parents, and they worked together so sweetly. Micah weighed 7lb 4oz and 20.5 inches long, and had a cool battledore placenta. Congratulations Erin and Chris!
