New Study Finds Fewer Americans Are Developing Dementia—But More Are Living with It

“We’re seeing encouraging signs that fewer people are being newly diagnosed with dementia each year,” said Jay B. Lusk, MD, MBA, preventive medicine resident at the UNC Department of Family Medicine and visiting research scholar at Duke University. “At the same time, people with dementia are living longer than before, which underscores the need for long-term care planning, caregiver support, and equitable dementia care delivery.”

An analysis of Medicare data, led by researchers at the UNC School of Medicine, Duke University School of Medicine, and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, reveals that new dementia cases are falling but the number of people living with dementia is rising.

Is it Old Age or Something Else?

As our parents age, they will develop specific “quirks” and behaviors that are often waved away
as “just another part of getting old.” For example, another Reddit post asks, “What 'old people'
thing do your parents do which drives you crazy?” Commenters mention that their parents steal
glasses from restaurants, hide or hoard things around the house, or forget to take life-saving
medications. Sometimes these are signs that something else is going on.

Here are 10 warning signs of dementia:
1. Memory loss
2. Communication problems (difficulty verbalizing thoughts, remembering words, etc)
3. Confusion over time and place
4. Difficulty performing everyday tasks like cooking, cleaning, bathing, or other self-care tasks
5. Poor or decreased judgment
6. Consistently misplacing or losing things (Keys? Who’s seen ‘em?)
7. Changes in mood or behavior (personality changes, lashing out, increased agitation, etc).
8. Challenges understanding visual or spatial information
9. Withdrawal from work or social activities (A lifelong church-goer doesn't attend services anymore).

Medication Mistakes Can Be Fatal; Here's How to Prevent Them

Drug errors and interactions can be fatal. Here’s the story of Alice Brennan, a vibrant 88-year-old woman who loved to dance and joke with friends. After she sought treatment for severe neck pain at the emergency room, the doctor prescribed Flexeril. However, this act would later prove more dangerous than Alice’s family could imagine.

Later, her neurologist advised that Flexeril was not an appropriate drug for her age and condition. He told Alice to discontinue using it immediately. After a bout with gout, Alice went to a rehabilitation facility, where she was mistakenly given Flexeril again. Six weeks later, Alice was found dead. The cause? Medication error.
