The first eyeglasses didn’t have arms at all. Early versions, invented in Italy in the late 1200s, were basically two lenses riveted together that you had to balance on your nose or hold up by hand. The “arms” that hook over your ears didn’t show up until hundreds of years later—around the 1700s.

So for a long time, wearing glasses was less “set it and forget it” and more “hope you don’t sneeze.”
