❗️Shout out to this girl for crushing her myofunctional therapy program with Breathe! ❗️

Paisyn started with a pretty severe tongue tie, in stage 1 ortho, and has always been a severe mouth breather, had a tongue thrust while eating/drinking, and struggled with being tired all the time with congestion. 🤧

With a great team behind her, she finished up with stage 1 ortho, had a tongue/lip tie release done, and completed her therapy program. She looks well rested, can breathe through her nose, and feels great so she can be a super star on and off the court/field. 😉

💜 Paisyn, I am so proud of you and your hard work, your parents for investing in your health, and I can’t wait to watch you continue to grow and thrive in the years to come! 💜

🌟 Success Story 🌟

This young man is a prime example of why airway exams should be performed at every dental visit and makes me so excited for his healthy future!

👦🏼 This kiddo had a severe tongue tie, extremely vaulted palate/narrow airway, deviated septum, very enlarged adenoids, and was struggling to breathe daily as he only had 1 nostril he could get air through due to his deviated septum. He had bags under his eyes, was a restless sleeper, snored, mouth breathed, and struggled with seasonal allergies.

😴 The poor kid was exhausted and has struggled all his 12 years of life because of it, but didn’t know any different!

✔️Fast forward 6 months with a team behind him, he successfully completed a tongue tie release, had his deviated septum corrected and adenoids removed, is now in a palatal expander and ortho to widen his palate and expand his airway, and just completed his myotherapy program! 🎉

😊He looks and feels better than ever and won’t roll into adulthood with issues that could play a huge factor in his long term health!

👏🏼 I am so proud of all his hard work and positive attitude, and to his parents for investing in his long term health success! Way to go buddy, here’s to breathing and feeling great!

-Check out this before and after picture of almost completing her myotherapy program!

-It’s absolutely incredible how correcting her mouth breathing, tongue posture, and swallowing habits can do for just your profile!

-She also no longer suffers from jaw pain, limited opening abilities, headaches, forward neck posture, and neck tension!

-She sleeps better, feels better, and is so grateful after years of being told she has nothing wrong by multiple providers…she stuck to her gut and reached out and we managed to eliminate all these issues for her!

So proud of this patient and her hard work and persistence on her journey with myotherapy and letting me be her provider! 💙

For those wondering what a before and after looks like on a baby, here are great pictures of an 11 week old baby boy who just had his lip and tongue frenectomy done.

- Mom had reached out to me regarding nursing issues, was struggling to take a bottle, and along with some other issues.

- After talking with her and her struggles I put her in contact with a phenomenal OT/feeding specialist/lactation consultant in our area to determine what exactly was happening while nursing/feeding.

- Post frenectomy with a laser- baby is now nursing better, without pain on moms end, taking a bottle, swallowing correctly therefore not taking in nearly as much air, and also has a lot less facial and muscular tension throughout his whole body.

- Setting this child up as an infant with good oral-motor skills, ability to have good lip and tongue posture, and making sure his airway has the guidance needed to develop properly is priceless.

I’m always here to help with any age, and if I can’t help, I will make sure I will direct you in the direction to someone who can, that I trust whole-heartedly.

When I talk to my younger patients and their parents, I always let them know this is a marathon…not a sprint.

I always try to stress to my parents of kiddos who need expansion/stage 1 ortho, myo therapy, and possibly other specialities the sooner you start intervention on treatment, the better the success will be!

My little man just finished with stage 1 ortho, which entailed a palatal expander, and braces on the upper teeth to try and make enough space for all his adult teeth.

Next step, tongue tie release, finish with our myo therapy, and get a consultation with a ENT for a severely deviated septum and enlarged adenoids.

Working with a team of experts who aren’t just about straightening teeth, but whole body health is only going to give you and/or your little ones the healthiest future, and to me that’s priceless!

Shout out to Profile Orthodontics and Facial Orthopedics for the phenomenal care, had Jax not been seen by Dr Essink, he would have been headed for multiple permanent teeth extractions which would have severely impacted his long term health and airway.

Reach out to Breathe with any questions or concerns on you or your own children, the sooner the better!

- These diagrams are great examples as to why every medical and dental professional should be asking and examining every patient on their airway and if they have any signs or symptoms of a possible obstruction.

⚠️ Large tonsils/adneoids
⚠️ Low tongue posture
⚠️ Mouth breathing
⚠️ Snoring/loud breathing
⚠️ Grinding/clenching
⚠️ Allergies/Asthma
⚠️ Tired all the time/kids having hyperactivity or emotional outburst
⚠️ Tongue Tied
⚠️ Have to sleep on your side or stomach
⚠️ Acid Reflux

- If we as providers don’t get to the actual root cause and continually place “band aids” on these signs/symptoms you will result with sleep apnea, hormonal imbalances, constant fatigue, brain fog, etc. and your long term health has just been significantly impacted.

- Medications are quick fixes, but the side effects are what will make a huge impact on your quality of life.

‼️Think about alternative treatment that could actually fix the problem, not just cover up the symptoms.‼️

“The Spot”

This is a phrase you will hear me say all day, everyday.

👅 “the spot” refers to the place where your tip of your tongue should always be when resting and also swallowing.

👅 the remaining part of your tongue should also be in full contact with the roof of your mouth at rest.

⚠️If this is NOT where your tongue placement is, I can almost guarantee you your risk for developing long term health issues with sleep apnea, acid reflux, grinding and clenching, TMJ issues, relapse in ortho treatment, chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, allergies, etc, goes up exponentially.

⚠️Don’t let bad tongue posture have a negative impact on your life!

Working with toddlers and doing their myofunctional exercises is all about making it fun and on their time. I never expect perfection just progress and sometimes with a 3 year old, you do the exercises while waiting for your breakfast at a restaurant. 😉

Here’s a great example of an exercise called “cheek puffs” for adults and “blowfish” for my pediatric patients.

This is a staple exercise in working on strengthening facial muscles which aids in proper lip seal and nasal breathing.

Is this a familiar picture every night in your house? Are you always tired? On high blood pressure or cholesterol meds? Brain fog? Hormonal imbalances?

Did you know myofunctional therapy has been shown to reduce sleep apnea up to 50% in adults and 60% in children.

If I could stress one thing to all my patients is just get a sleep test done!

How you sleep and how much oxygen you get while you sleep is so vital to your overall health! A sleep test will give us the details we need as providers to help you to prevent or improve this picture and your overall quality of life!

Myofunctional Therapy can retrain your brain to breathe through your nose and make sure our tongue and facial muscles are in proper position so we don’t result in obstructive sleep apnea.

These 4 goals are what I strive for on each one of my patient’s long term.

Very easy concepts, but majority of people struggle to achieve them on the day to day basis.

How do we achieve them?

-Determine if there is a barrier in being able to breathe through our nose, or if the tongue is being restricted.

- Providing facial and tongue exercises to get you to be able to perform proper tongue position and lip seal to not over compensate with all your facial muscles during the normal day to day things of resting, eating, and swallowing.

- Re-train our brain to make the neuromuscular connection.

- Breathing exercises to make sure we are not over-breathing and causing an imbalance in our oxygen to carbon dioxide exchange.

Most of you are probably like what the heck am I looking at, but here’s my son Jax…again. My child, who will be my million dollar mouth, but that’s ok. 😉

I’d rather put the investment in now, than have him turn into an adult and spending thousands of dollars on his health and quality of life.

He is a perfect example of why that little piece of tissue under his tongue, can cause so many issues in children and adults. Jax is what we would classify as moderate-severely tongue tied.

Most parents have zero clue if their child is tongue tied, unless they were nursed and had latch issues. Even then, majority of pediatricians will not recommend a release unless they are not gaining weight. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Here’s why it’s such a big deal:

👅: the tongue is the guide for your upper palate to expand- if the tongue is not on the roof of the mouth when developing in children, your palate will naturally be a lot narrower and create a smaller airway and less room for your adult teeth to come in

👅: your tongue is vital for swallowing, chewing, and talking- if your tongue cannot reach the roof of your mouth or is challenging you will learn to over- compensate with all your other facial muscles- creating long term issues with jaw pain, tension headaches/migraines, speech issues, digestive issues

👅: people who are tongue tied generally result into mouth breathers- this will almost guarantee sleep apnea, grinding/clenching, improper facial development, and a slippery slope of medical issues long term

These are just a few examples of the major consequences of how that small little tissue under the tongue can cause MAJOR long term issues!

Don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re now checking under your tongue and thinking you may be someone who may have a tongue tie too, it’s never too late! 😊
