Please keep the family in prayer during this difficult time.
Betty Jean Ross Carter, age 89, a beloved soul whose spirit brightened the lives of all who had the fortune to know her, departed this world on June 17, 2025, at her home, enveloped in the warmth and love of her family. Born on January 26, 1936, in Silver Creek, Indiana, Betty lived a life marked by love, generosity, and an unwavering strength that made her a guiding light to many.

A proud graduate of Charlestown High School, Class of 1954, Betty embarked on a career that would embody her commitment to caring for others. For over 15 years, she served as a Pharmacy Tech at Seymour Pharmacy, providing kindness and compassion to everyone who crossed her path. Her vocation was not just a job; it was an extension of her nurturing nature.

As a member of The Order of the Eastern Star, Seymour Chapter 134, and the Amaranth Alyse Chapter, she embraced the bonds of sisterhood and service that these organizations fostered. Her faith played a pivotal role in her life, finding solace and strength within the community at The Church of Christ.

Betty was known for her feisty and strong-willed personality. She was a generous spirit, always eager to lend a helping hand to those in need. She had a particular knack for sewing, crafting, and embroidery, and her fondness for reading revealed her imaginative heart. The kitchen became her sanctuary where she delighted in creating cherished dishes, such as her famous meatloaf, pineapple upside-down cake, and hearty chili, each bite infused with love and care.

Her family was her pride and joy. She leaves behind her devoted children: Mark Cravens and his wife Debra of Bloomington, Indiana; Jim Cravens of Seymour, Indiana; and Anita Cravens and her spouse Becky Thompson of Coxs Creek, Kentucky. Betty's legacy continues through her five treasured grandchildren—Rebecca Brewer, Damon Gillis, Jessica Moss, Derek Gillis, and Jeremy Kittle—and her fourteen great-grandchildren who filled her heart with joy.

Though Betty now joins her father, Charles Ross Sr., her mother, Georgia Burr Ross, her husband of 13 years, Travis Carter, and her brother, Charles Ross Jr., as well as her great-great-grandson, Lane Cobb, she leaves behind an indelible mark on this world.

A visitation will be held on Monday, June 23, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM at Christensen Family Funeral Home in Seymour, Indiana. She will be laid to rest following services at Riverview Cemetery.

In the tapestry of life, Betty Jean Ross Carter wove her own pattern of love, strength, and resilience, forever cherished in the memories of those she touched.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Schenck Hospice.

Brett Allen Newkirk, age 57, a devoted husband, father, and friend, left this world on February 23, 2025, at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Indiana. Born on November 20, 1967, in Seymour, he grew up imbued with the spirit of his hometown—the kind of spirit that embodies a steadfast loyalty and an unwavering love for family and friends.

Brett was a Project Control Manager for Sun Right America, where he was known not only for his professionalism but also for his genuinely caring demeanor. Those who had the privilege to work alongside him knew him as a man of few words, yet when he chose to speak, his voice resonated with wisdom and warmth. Brett was a jokester at heart, skilled at bringing smiles and laughter to those around him, yet his giving nature often shone brighter than any punchline, earning him the respect and admiration of many.

A proud graduate of Seymour High School, class of 1986, Brett cherished his education and the foundation it laid for the meaningful path he walked through life. Following high school, he dedicated part of his life to serving in the United States Army, a testament to his commitment to his country and his community. He was current president of Seymour Moose Lodge.

Brett's spirit soared brightest when he was surrounded by the natural beauty of the beach. He found sheer joy in the sun-kissed sands and the tranquil waves of Key West, St. Croix, The Virgin Islands, and the South Pacific Islands. The ocean called to him, a siren song that complemented his soul and evoked fond memories of laughter and leisure.

His hobbies were equally fulfilling; whether it was indulging in a good poker game, sharing stories over a cold beer, or perfecting his pool and dart skills, Brett’s zest for life was contagious. Above all, he had an unwavering love for his dogs and his family, a reminder of the simple pleasures that brought him profound happiness.

In life, Brett was supported by a loving family who cherished him deeply. He is survived by his beloved wife, Christy McCallister Newkirk, along with his cherished children: Taylor, Reid, Olivia, and Jessica Howard and her husband Chase, as well as Abigail McIntosh and her husband Braydn. Brett's legacy continues through his three grandchildren, Sampson Newkirk, Jude Newkirk, and Brody Howard, who will carry forth his spirit of love and laughter.

His memory will be cherished forever by his mother and stepfather, Sue Neaman and her husband Steve. He leaves behind a stepmother, Vicki Baker Newkirk, and his stepbrother Aaron Self and his wife Becky..

Brett was preceded in death by his father, Donald Newkirk, whose absence was felt deeply. Their bond, now transformed into a cherished memory, infuses his family's hearts with solace.

As we gather to remember Brett Allen Newkirk, we celebrate a life filled with laughter, love, and an unwavering kindness that impacted all who were fortunate enough to know him. In a world that often rushes past, Brett's gentle presence will linger, reminding us to cherish the moments, love fiercely, and always find time for a good laugh.

Cremation was chosen and a Celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 22,2025 from 12:00 PM until 4;00 PM at Moose Family Center.
