The Medical Reserve Corps system is getting ready to celebrate 20 years of providing services country wide. Volunteers are the backbone of this system and provide medical and nonmedical services.
Our Jackson County unit has been in existence and has served in both emergency and nonemergency situations, supporting the Health Department and supplementing staff during those times.
During COVID, the MRC volunteers have worked to vaccinate the community , make masks, organizing PPE equipment and by serving in organizing and running specific clinics for the past year and a half.
Our response to this emergency could not have happened without our volunteers. We cannot thank you enough nor can the community members who have benefited from your unselfish donation of your time and moral support. Again, thank you.

If you think you have what it takes to become an MRC volunteer, let us know. We would love to talk with you about your skills and how you might be of benefit to the community.

As more and more vaccine becomes available in Jackson County, the Health Department has an increase in need for volunteers. If you enjoy working/helping people and have some computer skills, we would welcome your help. If you are an RN with a few hours to spare and would like to work with a team of other nurses getting the vaccine into arms, we would welcome your help. Just message, call 812 522-6474 or respond to lmontgomery@jacksoncounty.in.gov and get signed up. We are going to be working diligently until everyone wanting to be vaccinated gets the opportunity.

The Medical Corp volunteers are needed!!
Vaccinating Hoosiers against COVID-19 quickly and efficiently will be a full-scale public health initiative at the state and local level. To prepare Indiana for COVID-19 vaccine distribution and optimize resources, the Indiana Department of Health has partnered with the Bowen Center to create and identify a pool of licensed healthcare workers, students, and other Hoosiers who are willing to volunteer
with vaccine distribution.
The Jackson County Health Department is anticipating receipt of vaccines in early January and is currently developing the plans for distribution. But, this is a monumental task and will require some assistance from the community. Volunteers of all types will be required; skilled medical, data and record completion, inventory control; IT; traffic control; and interpreters. The schedule for vaccination clinics and locations have yet to be determined, so, if you have a flexible schedule and a desire to assist our population receive this vaccine, please fill out the volunteer form in its entirety and click submit at the bottom of the page. For additional information on the COVID-19 vaccine in Indiana, please click on the FAQ or visit this link (Hoosier Heroes Rise Up) to sign up to volunteer! Thanks for all you do to protect the health
and safety of Hoosiers.

What do your Tuesdays look like? Busy? Have a few hours to volunteer with the Health Department? Our MRC (Medical Reserve Corps) volunteers serve the health department with support and additional man power.
During the months of September and October, the Health Department will be conducting a series of Tuesday drive-thru flu clinics from 10-2 at 801 W 2nd Street. Volunteers assist the professional staff by helping individuals complete their medical forms, answer questions and direct traffic. Each job has a job description and same-day training. Volunteers need not be available for all hours or days.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Lin Montgomery, Unit Leader at 812 522-6474.

Severe Weather Preparedness Week Begins March 17 Hoosiers encouraged to prepare now for thunderstorms, tornadoes, flooding

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) encourages Hoosiers to plan ahead for extreme weather as part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week, March 17-23.

“Severe Weather Preparedness Week serves as a great reminder of the increased potential for thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding in Indiana during the spring and early summer,” said David Hosick, director of public affairs at IDHS. “We are hopeful Indiana is not heavily impacted by severe weather this spring, but taking the time in advance to plan, prepare and practice can help minimize weather-related deaths, injuries and property damage.”

IDHS encourages Hoosiers to build a disaster preparedness kit, identify shelter and practice emergency plans during this year’s preparedness week.

Ten important items to include in a household disaster preparedness kit include:

1. Food and water for three days (include one gallon of water per person, per day)
2. Battery operated all hazard radio (receives more than 60 types of emergency alerts)
3. Flashlight
4. Extra batteries for radio and flashlight, if needed
5. First aid kit
6. Extra clothing, sturdy shoes, rain gear, blankets and personal hygiene items
7. List of emergency phone numbers
8. Important documents (copies of photo ID, social security card, insurance and banking information)
9. Cash (small bills. Power outages can limit ability to use ATMs and credit cards)
10. Special items (baby formula, insulin, life sustaining medication, pet supplies)

As part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week, a statewide tornado drill is planned for 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19. This drill provides a valuable opportunity for families, schools and businesses to practice severe weather emergency plans. Some ways families can practice during the statewide tornado drill are:

Take household members – quickly but calmly – to the location they would move to in severe weather, ideally a basement. If a basement is not available, go to an interior room on the lowest level with no windows. Storm cellars also offer excellent protection.Practice moving under a sturdy table or desk, or covering up with pillows, blankets, coats or a mattress to protect the head and body from flying debris.Walk through potential evacuation routes, both from the home and the neighborhood.Conduct a family drill in which children pretend to call 911 and calmly talk with an emergency dispatcher (a family member or friend can be on the other end of the line, requesting appropriate information).

Finding suitable shelter is another important aspect to prepare for severe weather. If living in a mobile home or similar manufactured structure, it is important to locate a safe shelter in advance. For those living in homes or apartment buildings, residents should take shelter in the lowest level of the building, away from windows and doors.

Flooding also threatens Hoosiers during the spring months. Driving on flooded roadways can often place Hoosiers and emergency response personnel in unnecessary danger. Never drive through flooded roadways, even if the water appears shallow. The road may have washed out under the surface of the water.

Do 1 Thing is a 12-month program that makes it easy for you to prepare yourself, your family, and your community for emergencies or disasters.
Do1Thing in January: Make a Plan
Understand what puts you at risk from disasters and take steps to lower your risk.
Tasks
Plan what to do if you have to evacuate.
Choose two places for your family to meet. One should be right outside your home in case of a sudden emergency, such as a fire.
Take steps now to prevent damage to your home in a disaster.
Once you know what disasters could happen in your community, there are things you can do to lower your risk of injury or property damage.
Learn what disasters can happen in your area and decide what you will do in a disaster.
Knowing what disasters could happen can help you know how to be prepared and what to do. Contact your local American Red Cross or emergency management office to learn more about the disasters in your area.
