A Wall Street Journal analysis of Medicare data found a pattern of Medicare Advantage’s sickest patients dropping their privately run coverage just as their health needs soared.

Medicare Advantage patients in the last year of life were far more likely to switch to traditional Medicare, shifting costs from insurers.

Traditional Medicare, paired with a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) may have a higher monthly premium, but offers more choice of medical providers and services without pre-authorization from a for-profit insurance company. Medicare 'Advantage' Plans have lower monthly premiums, but may not cover medical providers in your area and might limit services, depending on the plan you choose.

Some of you may receive postcards similar to this in the mail. THEY ARE NOT FROM MEDICARE! These cards are sent by FOR-PROFIT insurance companies selling a medicare 'advantage' plan that can cost you more out-of-pocket if you are sick, or deny services altogether when you most need them. This is the time of year, right before Medicare Open Enrollment, where our patients are inundated with offers in the mail, newspaper or television that claim to give you 'free groceries' and other things that sound too good to be true. ALWAYS READ THE FINE PRINT! Traditional Medicare, along with a Medicare Supplemental Insurance are always recommended to our patients so they can get the medical services they need with the providers they choose! Jerry Don Wilson, age 62, of McLean, Texas, left us to be with his Lord on September 3, 2024. He was the son of Roy and Flo Wilson. Jerry graduated from Newcastle High School in 1980. He served his country four years as a U.S. Navy Corpsman. After an Honorable Discharge, Jerry returned to Newcastle. He attended the University of Oklahoma and graduated from the OU Physician’s Associates Program in August of 1990. He continued to serve his country in the reserves until 1993. Jerry made his home in McLean, Texas. He was devoted to his patients at the Shamrock General Hospital and Shamrock Family Care Clinic both in Shamrock, Texas, and enjoyed snow skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling, and restoring vintage autos. Jerry was preceded in death by his mother, Flo, and his brother, Johnny. Jerry is survived by his father, Roy; brother, Jimmy and wife, Cheryl; nephew, Christopher and wife, Kristian; great-nephew, Diesel; great-nieces, Kota and Kora; and nephew, Scott. Jerry leaves behind other family members as well as all the friends he made over the years. The family will have a private graveside farewell and appreciate all your prayers. Jerry will be missed by his SGH family and the community.
