Adult Falls are the #1 cause of adult injury across the U.S. every year. Today’s icy conditions are very hazardous. Please stay home if you can, treat icy surfaces and if you must go outside, “Walk Like a Penguin” to stay on your feet and out of the hospital!

01/11/2022

Tonight will be extremely cold and windy, creating what is known as “wind chill.” These conditions can cause cold weather injuries such as frostbite and hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Remember there is no bad weather, just poor clothing choices. Dress for the elements and stay safe!

Stay safe out there!

Shandaken Ambulance had an incredibly busy day on Saturday. We ended up having two auto accidents (both minor accidents), an injured hiker (requiring a hoist lift from the middle of the wilderness), and a medical call that resulted in 5 (no typo..5) patients being transported.

Our crews worked flawlessly- and received help from the following agencies at the height of the simultaneous calls-

Phoenicia fire department
Shandaken Police
Town of Olive Police
Olive fire department
New York State Police
NYS Encon
Ulster County Department of Emergency Services
Olive first aid unit
Woodstock Fire Department
West Hurley Fire Department
Margaretville Hospital EMS

As we normally staff one crew on weekends we end up relying heavily on mutual aid(other entities that come to help from adjoining communities).

It’s not like the City where you have reciprocal resources a couple of blocks away. Our closest backup paramedic ambulance comes from over 15 miles away.

Fortunately, we have a backup system that recalls off duty members at a moments notice to staff our second ambulance.

Thanks to all who came out to assist!

- Richard Muellerleile

Chief of Department, Town of Shandaken Ambulance Service

1pm update-

Update from our Supervisor:
UPDATE 1:00 pm, MONDAY, AUGUST 23, 2021:

As always these storms are Unpredictable at times. Heavy rains this morning have pushed the Esopus into a technical "Flood Stage" (9 ft in elev. at gage) from USGS. If it reaches 10.5 -11 ft our concerns heighten, especially regarding road closures and power outages.

We will post if closures occur. Most will be temporary and will resolve before evening...we hope and anticipate.

As of 11:30 today, the gauge is at 9.56 ft high. We recommend if you live along smaller streams and rivulets (small little channels by the stream that are dry 95% of the time) that are nearing breach either by your home or Road, you relocate to higher ground soon.

Start charging phones and devices. Check vehicle fuel and anticipate a power disruption. If we hit "Action Stage," (10 - 11ft.) we start evacuation calls throughout Town and anticipate road closures and outages. At 13-14ft.+, is when it typically breaches Main St, Phoenicia and Pine Hill.
**Please do not drive through flooded roads or over any power lines. ALWAYS call 911 if an emergency develops. For more information check our FB page or website at (shandaken.us).

Stay well, Robert A. Stanley, C.F.M., Town Supervisor/Floodplain Administrator

Monday morning update from the Town-

Supervisor UPDATE - 7:30am MONDAY, AUGUST 23, 2021:
Nothing substantial to report from the overnight. We have been monitoring streams, tributaries, ditches and roads during the night.

Rain is due to continue, with Heavy T-storms during the day. There is nothing to report other than we will continue under NWS Flood Watch until at least 4-8pm. I say 4pm because we are "lumped in" with many Counties and Towns moving westward into Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont.

The cells should moving out of our area around 4pm before the others. We don't expect to break "bankful," (streams should not escape their existing channel) but there are areas lower than that and frequently flood including: McKenley Hollow(Hlw), Oliverea Rd., Lower Birch into B**h Creek, Fox Hlw, Broadstreet Hlw, Woodland Valley, Silver Hhlw, Plank and High Streets-Phoenicia And D**e Rd area of Mt. Pleasant.

Be mindful and don't drive through water on roadways, you never know what's floating in the water. Other than that, go about your day and remain vigilant.

Power outages are still a threat so if leaving home today make the house is prepared for periods or long term outages. Check the Town website for preparedness tips.

Other than that we will monitor and address situations as they appear. We will post any road closures or changes. Esopus gages are up with us monitoring every update. The waters of streams will appear murky, this is normal erosion, no need for alarm.

Stay safe and dry, if you see or have an emergency, do not hesitate (within reason) to call 911.
Stay well, Robert A. Stanley, C.F.M., Town Supervisor/Floodplain Administrator

TROPICAL STORM HENRI UPDATE-

The Town of Shandaken is asking residents to begin preparedness for power outages and possible flooding.

As of 130pm, NWS Hurricane Center is hesitant to release models.as it changes minute to minute. Although we are not currently projected for a direct hit (3-5+ in. of rain with High winds) by TS Henri, it remains a possibility. It also ranges to a "tap and go" which moves along and means 1-3 inches with EXTREMELY HIGH winds.

We will continue to monitor and post.

In the meantime we are informing residents to check batteries and charge all electronic devices. Exercise sump pumps and generators that may need lubrication or fuel.

Please plan on limiting unnecessary travel overnight tomorrow 8/21-22. Fuel vehicles if in low lying ground and park on higher ground. Plan on relocating vehicles to a higher elevation, especially if next to a stream, in case of flooding.

Even short power outages will disturb communications. Know that for a prolonged outage and following the storm to visit your local Fire Station for information.

Do not attempt drive through or over any running water, or approach downed electrical wires. Please report downed wires to 911.

Stock up on ice, water and non-perishable food items (pasta, canned items, etc.). Please check on neighbors- especially the elderly.

Emergency teams will be heading out to follow up on Special needs patients, or those who may need special assistance. If you have a loved one that is an oxygen dependent/ medical technology dependent individual living in the Town please contact ambulance@shandaken.us or message this page so that we can compile a list.

We will continue to monitor and update as we progress. Please visit shandaken.us for more preparedness information and updates.OR LIKE (👍) the Town of Shandaken FB page.

Stay safe and let's hope for the best for ourselves and our neighbors and others that will be affected by this storm.

Sincerely,
Robert A. Stanley, C.F.M.
Town Supervisor &
Floodplain Administrator

Please stay alert and prepare.

TO ALL RESIDENTS OF SHANDAKEN: the Town of Shandaken, as well as Ulster County, are monitoring the weather hourly.
There are models a small (currently roughly less than 10% chance) for TS Henri showing it squarely hitting Ellenville and Sundown through Shokan and Kingston exiting around Saugerties!
No panic, just keeping an eye on it.
Regardless, expect heavy rain and high winds on Sunday afternoon to Monday evening.
Even the outer wings are receiving damages.
Power outages are possible.
Please be prepared! If it progresses, the Town and others will be issuing alerts. Stay posted for updates at Town of Shandaken, NY FB and website. Shandaken.us
Stay safe,
Shandaken Supervisor,
