We are devestated by the news of the death of Nex Benedict, a non-binary, Native American student, high school student in Oklahoma. Nex, a sophomore, was brutally beaten by other students earlier this month and died the following day. Nex had been facing bullying since the Oklahoma government banned transgender students from using school bathrooms that align with their gender identity in early 2023. The death of Nex is a direct correlation of a culture of transphobia often being stoked by state officials, policies, and laws.

Trans and non-binary people, especially youth, face violence every day just for being themselves. We have seen a rise of laws that limit access to medical care, bathrooms, and participation in sports. We have seen laws prevent schools and supportive staff from respecting a student’s gender identity. These laws create environments where Trans and Non-binary students are isolated, vulnerable, and unprotected.

ALL Trans and non-binary youth deserve their right to life, to dignity, to authenticity, and to support in their schools and community. Nex, you deserved more.

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Today, and everyday, we stand in solidarity with, honor, grieve, and remember all the Transgender lives who have been lost to anti-transgender violence. No one should lose their life for simply being themselves.

Mosaic Medical will continue to celebrate, lift up, protect the rights, and care for ALL Trans lives.

Trans rights are human rights.

On June 28th, 1969, The Stonewall Inn was unexpectedly raided by police, sparking an uprising that would forever change the state of q***r rights.

During this period in American history, laws existed which made it illegal for individuals to wear more than three articles of clothing prescribed for members of the opposite s*x, including underwear. Relations between individuals of the same s*x was illegal. Queerness and transness were severely stigmatized and the target of political vitriol. For this reason, a bar like the Stonewall Inn became a safe-haven for the q***r community of Greenwich Village.

At this point, we all know the story: upon being raided, members of the q***r community came together to resist the oppression of the police. Led by trans women of color, the Stonewall Uprising lasted five days. From this point forward, people in power realized the sheer power and unity of the q***r community. For this reason, Pride is celebrated in June.

On this Stonewall Anniversary, we reflect on where we came from -- the legislation which dictated gender expression and romantic interests -- and we consider where we are now. In a world where we have come so very far from the 1960s, we will not stand idly by and return to the level of control and oppression exacted upon LGBT folks in that time. We do not have the time or space to turn back. We will continue forward. We are .
