True or False: You should “suck in” your stomach to engage your core during Pilates.

False!

“Sucking in” may feel like engagement, but it actually restricts your breathing and limits natural movement.

In Pilates, we focus on breathing to activate the deep core muscles—especially on the exhale. This allows for better alignment, more mobility, and sustainable strength.

The hundreds is a foundational Pilates exercise designed to warm up the body, engage the core, improve circulation—and most importantly—train breath control.

This exercise uses rhythmic breathing:

👉 Inhale for 5 counts
👉 Exhale for 5 counts

When done correctly, it promotes:
Relaxation and muscle efficiency
A deeper connection to the core
Better flow and endurance

Bracing during the Hundreds - holding your breath or using excessive force adds unnecessary tension and limits the benefits of the movement. Controlled breathing allows you to stay mindful, aligned, and fully engaged.

In Pilates, exhalation is your secret weapon for core control.

Try this:
As you exhale, gently draw your ribs inward and feel your deep core muscles activate - especially the transverse abdominis (your body’s natural corset).
This creates stability without over-bracing or tensing your neck and shoulders.

Remember:
Inhale = expand and prepare
Exhale = engage and move
Your breath isn’t just air - it’s support.

Breathe, Don’t Brace. Bracing your core might feel like strength, but it can restrict your breath and inhibit your movement.

In Pilates and CoreAlign, we teach you to breathe to move with ease. The result? More power, less tension and more fun.

True or False: A strong core means having visible abs.

False!

Core strength is about function, not appearance. It includes deep muscles like the transverse abdominis and pelvic floor—and supports posture, stability, and spinal health.

Thanks, Perin!

“Deana is fantastic! I came to her a total mess - I had issues with my hip and leg and walked like I needed a hip replacement at 32. My initial goal was to just “walk normally again and then get in shape” - I never imagined how much better I would feel after working with Deana over the course of just a few sessions.

She takes a holistic approach and is able to identify the underlying issues at play - not only am I walking functionally again, but I’ve been able to regain (and exceed!) a level of core stability and fitness I thought was out of reach.

I still continue to work with Deana and greatly value her ability to support and push me appropriately towards my goals.”

Pilates Tip of the Month: Slow is strong.

Want more strength from your practice? Try slowing down your transitions. Controlled movement builds deeper strength and activates muscles that momentum tends to skip.

Next time you flow through your sequence, take a beat. Notice how your body responds—and how much harder your muscles work.

Are you standing strong… or just standing? Proper alignment is everything. Small shifts in your posture can unlock core engagement and protect your joints.

This month, check in with your feet, hips, and spine. Are you stacked or slouching? Are you gripping or grounded?

Ask Pam or Deana for a quick posture check before class—it’s a game changer.
