Visions of Independence- help for people with low vision

Visions of Independence- help for people with low vision Visions of Independence is an occupational therapy practice that helps people with low vision increase their safety and independence.

There are times when some patients, despite their doctor’s best efforts, are left with some level of visual impairment. This often seems to make reading, writing and doing everyday tasks almost impossible. Our trained occupational therapists work with people in their own homes. They can teach people who have limited vision new ways to do everyday things and introduce them to some simple adaptive equipment that can make things a lot easier. We increase the independence and safety of people who have macular degeneration, glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy.

Occupational Therapy and Low Vision Rehabilitation

At Visions of Independence, our mission is to encourage occupational therapists to consider adding low vision rehabilitation as a meaningful part of their practice. Here are some important reasons why:

Recognized by Medicare – Occupational therapists are identified as the designated providers of low vision rehabilitation.

A growing need – Low vision most often occurs with age, and as our elder population continues to grow, so does the number of older adults living with vision loss. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough trained professionals to meet this rising demand.

A perfect fit for OTs – Occupational therapists already have the skills to support people with physical challenges and to help them maximize daily function and independence. These strengths are especially important for older adults with low vision, who often face additional physical difficulties compounded by sight loss. With just a bit of specialized training, OTs are well-positioned to fill this critical gap.

Rewarding work – Low vision rehabilitation is often provided one-on-one in patients’ homes, where therapists can teach practical, life-changing strategies. Even a few sessions can make a remarkable difference—helping patients regain independence, confidence, and a renewed sense of quality of life.

Please feel free to chat more about this.

A recent study suggests that 34.1% of low vision patients showed major or sub-threshold depression. Ophthalmologists whom we have spoken to believe that the more accurate number is over 50 percent. While we are not psychologists, we do hear from our patients who tell us all the losses that they face because of their vision problems. Besides the obvious loss of vision, our low vision patients face many other significant losses:

• Independence: The loss of being able to drive anywhere at anytime. Getting to places now means being totally dependent on someone else or a transportation system and fitting into their schedules.

• Privacy: Bills and letters, most often, have to be read to them. Now, someone else knows their affairs.

• The ability to do the things that used to be done with ease; playing music, sewing, woodworking, cooking favorite family recipes,
• The many little accidents; pouring and then spilling, knocking over or into things or missing the toothbrush when applying toothpaste.

When all the above is taken together, it can be easily seen how someone who has lost vision loses self-esteem. As we have heard, "I can't even pour a cup of coffee for myself without making a mess." Vision rehabilitation increases independence and self-esteem which are very powerful factors that can reduce depression.

Low vision patients try to use their old personal phone books but can’t. Typically, the writing was cursive, small and using a ball point ink pen. There are strategies to create phone book pages that are far easier for low visions to read. To learn more, go to this link:
